Excellent point. All one has to do is read up on the "Battle of Okinawa" (April, 1945) - the bloodiest battle of the Pacific war.
A blood bath to say the least - horrific casualties on both sides! The entire Japanese forces stationed there virtually wiped-out (~100,000). Upwards toward 150,000 civilian casualties as many families chose suicide than face defeat by the Americans.
