lol. OP estimates 1 in 40 males have the potential to run sub-4:00 when only a few thousand have ever done it out of the estimate 50-60 billion who have ever lived. Because he got beat by a kid in PE. Sigh.
p.s. I ran 4:17 in high school and 4:06 in college.
As I referred to in my post,
I was getting throttled by more than half of my 50ish guy highschool team for half of my highschool career and it took until the end of my senior year XC season to emerge as the best runner on my team. The previous best mile-5k guy had been the best mile-5k guy since our sophomore year. The best 800m guy didn’t run freshman year and was our #2 by our sophomore year. My freshman PR in the 800m, my best event was 2:49.
Ive now run 48.6, 1:49, and 3:48. I am the fastest 800m runner who has ever come from my highschool and it’s been around since the early 90s.
Does this mean my entire team had the potential to be upper D1 caliber mid distance runners? No lol I was just out of shape, it took me years to get in shape, and lots of athletes showed up to that team in much better shape than I was. At the end of the day, I was the best mid-d runner at a school with a few thousand kids, and although i’d say I was giving it my 90-95% best effort.. there were kids who started out faster than me, were eating healthier than me, being more consistent than me, and running more miles than me who couldn’t beat me.
