He never steps off the track until he does so on purpose because he is giving up. Hocker tripped equally as bad (Kessler's fault) but Hocker did not quit.

Kessler had plenty of space to stay on the track and the fall didn't even push him off to the inside. He just jumps off the track like a wimp.

Of course your opinion is speculation as well. He wasn’t injured and it’s debatable whether he should have stepped of the track.

His decision has nothing to do with how he’ll do at USATF, so either way, I don’t care.

although it is impossible to know what was going on his head you really think at that time with so much happening so quickly he processed a dq in his brain AND decided to quit because of that knowledge. willing to bet he doesn't know the rules. and if he thought this was it he would have been wrong anyway

Hocker cut in where there was no room causing Kessler to run into the back of him. DQ worthy. Kessler should have kept running though. Nice Kid but seems a bit weak mentally. Doubt he makes the US team.

Except he never stepped out because of the contact. It is on VIDEO. He could have easily kept running but he quit and jumped off the track.

Getting tripped up affects athlete differently. I have had it happen to me me in which it energized me and allowed me to kick to a whole nother level and where it took everything out of me. Most likely the late is what happened to Mr. Kessler who seldomly has a bad race.

I rewatched that video about 5 times and he easily could have kept running. He was briefly tripped then stepped off the track.

If I were Kessler, next time I race hocker I d make sure to give him a good kidney punch. He spent 400 trying to run Kessler off the track.

I don't think you get dq'd for running inside the rail on the straight (when a fall/ contact causes it) unless you pass someone while inside the rail. (Particularly in a non-championship meet. If Hobbs finished right behind Hocker in 8th at 3:49.xx do you really think the officials are going to DQ him when it makes absolutely no difference to anything)
On the curve yes, but not on the straight. In any case, he should have finished the race unless he was badly spiked/ injured which it doesn't look like he was. Do I think this miscue makes Kessler an irredeemable athlete? Of course not. I just hope he runs with a little more grit come championship season.

No no no. Smart at that point. Not a race he needs. USA in a month, Olympics in 2, let this one go. Risk of injury too great, hit the rail perhaps. Save the Hassan type heroics for the two meets that matter.

In the wild 800 finish last week he similarly almost went off the track but got away with his gamble.
Both should allow him to train the fear of God into himself regarding trips and shoves.

Yea he needs to learn something. Even though Hocker didn’t have the position to cut in, Kessler should have let up and let him in. Better to let it go and keep running then to be right and get tripped up
