I wouldn't show a distance race. I'd show this video of an injured and underdog Dave Wottle come from 15 meters behind to win the 1972 Olympic 800 meters. This video includes some of the backstory, which makes the win even more impressive.
Just want to highlight the hilarious announcers. Lots of good lines, but my favorite is, "Some people said that he shouldn't have gotten married, that it was gonna ruin him!"

Even watching it on replay, it's one of those races where I still can't believe he's going to make it even knowing how it all turned out, all these years later. One of the most epic finishes ever (if you're a Yank anyway). Great shout.

I like watching this for the anachronistic announcing. Saying someone is from "the Ukraine" was more acceptable in 1972 than say 2022. And this is the only instance I have heard someone described as being from Keenya.
Great course, hills, solid coverage with high production value, drone shots, live splits, live team standings, and then there is the Valby breakaway, Tuohy catch plus NCST team tactics for the win.

I learned that cross country can be a contact sport in high school during some meets where the course went through a mid-race woody section where the officials couldn't watch without getting in the way and being too far from the start/finish.
We sometimes created our own version of the Wild West out there.

I have to throw in Abebe Bikila's 1960 Olympic Marathon. A relative unknown, running barefoot to win in WR time. How cool are the optics of the late stages of the race, nighttime, torch-lit cobblestone streets of Rome.

The Wottle rewatch from 2020 is worth seeing too, though maybe more for someone who is already a running fan:

They don't enjoy watching it. They show some interest in marathon because they were amazed people run that far. But that ship sailed because they see avg fatties from the block plodding along. 100 meters they can watch because it's short.
