Rhasidat Adeleke: the next big 400m star?

In the World Relays just gone, she split 49.4 and 49.6 1 hour apart in the Mixed & Women's 4x400 heats. The following day, she comes back to split 48.45 in the Mixed final! This is only a week or so after running 10.84 (+3.4) in the 100, beating Julien Alfred & Dina Asher-Smith by 3 tenths in that race. In 2022 she was 9th (first out of the final) in the 400m at Eugene WCs off of no 400m training (she was focused on the 1 + 2 at this time), and then went on to get 5th in the European Championships final from lane 1, after a full NCAA season. The following year she won the NCAA title in the 400m with a 49.20 (with a heavy headwind on the back stretch), beating Britton Wilson, and went on to come 4th in the Budapest 400m final. She's also set a PB in the 60m this year (not on WA profile as it was an unregistered collegiate meet in the early season) I believe she plans to do the 200m at the upcoming European Championships and then the 400m in Paris. She's clearly on a tremendous trajectory—could she be a gold medal threat?

There's no question she has immense talent. It's down to experience and coaching & mentality. Her NCAA form was amazing last season, but she was nowhere near the 49.2 she ran in June come Budapest.
She's a pro now, but has run 8 outdoor races already and it's only May 7th. I would rather have seen her open later than April, but I get that she's based in the US and so has taken advantage of the meetings available there. But she doesn't need to peak for a US Champs in June like others competing a lot right now....I just hope her coach has the right programme for her.
The potential is there for her to be amazing. She has the height of a Miler-Uibo, Bol, & Klaver, but has yet to have the stride length her body suggests it could. If she can open up her stride like SMU & Bol, she is going to be even faster.

I would guess she has more experience than last year and also her body is more mature.

So, in that case she would be a clear 2nd favourite for gold behind Paulino (I'm presuming SML isn't running open 400m).

These 2 are on their own in front for the moment. Then we have to wait and see if Naser and Miller-Uibo are in their previous form.

I have a feeling Bol will want to focus on Hurdles over flat with the level of competition this year.

Wishing Adekele the best, she definitely has open 48 sec potential.

At this point in time, it certainly does look like she could be a medal favourite alongside Paulino, although I want to see her run some open 400s outdoors first. Relays can be misleading, but clearly she's in outstanding form.

Note PJ Vazel, the French coach & statistician, had Adeleke's split as a 48.3, not 48.5 !!!

Watching Miller-Uibo was interesting. Despite all her talent & experience, she is not actually an experienced relay runner, because she never runs it. But her level here was the same as Kaczmarek/Bol/Klaver/Thomas/Holmes. Only Paulino & Adeleke had significantly faster split times. Paris is months away, we know she is on the comeback of childbirth, but I do wonder whether we are past her 48 runs in the open now.

Did you even read the comment you’re replying to with such sass? They clearly said they think SML will do the 400H, not the 100H. The implication is that she ran that recent 100H to work on hurdling technique, and there’s every likelihood the poster is aware she’s done that before.

I think they meant that if she's opening with 100MH, she must have some plans for the 400MH and not just the 400m, not that she's going to run the 100MH. So you two actually agree

From what I've seen from Adeleke the past few years I wouldn't be too worried about her being too fast too early. She's shown she can be consistently fast over a long stretch of time. She ran 22.5 in January 2023 as well as 49.9 in April 2023, and still ran 49s from May thru August 2023. In 2022 she started her season in February running 22.8/7.2 and maintained good form all the way to August at the European champs where she ran a then pr of 50.53. Even her 2021 results support that.
