Lots of truth here. Completing your race, be it 800m or a marathon, if you are really going to try your very best, there will be often times that you think that you just can't complete it. It's almost an act of faith when you race at your limit that you will complete it. Mental toughness is a big factor, and, in general, you wish to avoid DNF, except in cases of injury. It is a bad habit to get into. I once had a really bright coach that referred to DNFs within the training group; as a "f****** epidemic" and there was a lot of truth to that as well. It is not a habit that you wish to instil within a training group. And once you have done it (for reasons other than injury), it might be a bit easier to repeat it.
