But just being called the Best EVER....period.
An Olympic medal means you were the best on that day, but a WR means you are the best who has ever ran that race. i dont think saying your record will be broken has any relevance.
Also, think about the 25 grand or so you'd make breaking a world record...does that sway anything?
Okay think about it this way Joel. Your on a fishing trip with your son. Miles away from the closest short line. But oh no wait your boat's sprung a leak, and you don't have any life jackets. Ironically this leak is the exact size of an Olympic gold medal, and you don't have anything to plug the hole. Now you and your son are going to drown. All because you thaught it was more important to set the world record.
It really depends on what the athlete accomplishes outside of the Olympics/the world record as to how they are considered. I would consider Kipketer and Coe the two greatest 800m runners of all time, even though neither won a gold medal. However, at this point I would consider Justin Gaitlin the superior 100m runner to Asafa Powell because of his consistent success at the distance (as compared to Powell's flashes of brilliance).
In the case of Coe though he would have been tagged a complete failure by the British if he wouldn't have came back and won the Olympic 1500m. He even said that "it was worse than any hangover" -talking about not winning the Gold in the 800m. And in Seb's case
1.3%body fat(full bodied british ale)= terrible hangover

Id want to set a world record thats going to outlive me...if i die, i want to take my record with me to the grave, after that I could give a sh-t less if someone breaks it. I.E. i want to be Daniel Komen, 7:20.67 3,000 meters outdoors and his 7:24.90 indoors are not going to be broken in his lifetime...maybe not even mine.
