Nobody of intelligence thinks that going to college "changes one's IQ by any significant amount."

Likewise, nobody of intelligence would fail to recognize that those who choose to go to college, and successfully make it through, are self- (and other-) selected for intelligence.

College does not make one intelligent. College chooses those who are intelligent (on average).

So, you have a much larger fraction of the population going to college and comparisons between colleges based in part on graduation rates, so administrators push faculty to lower standards. At the same time, IQ scores have gone way up since the 1940s by reference to a constant standard, so today's 102 graduates would get scores comparable to or better than the elite 1940s college graduates in all likelihood, if they were tested on a similar scale and difficulty of IQ tests. That is the Flynn effect, where IQ test scores rise significantly every generation. But the standards still fall at universities despite what I am claiming is actually a comparable or better group of absolute IQ scores because of the current inadequate preparation for college among the general population going to college. They work a lot less hard and are expected to know less than 1940s collegians. IQ tests don't measure quantity of work or writing skills.

Just to round out that point, IQ is set at 100 as the average, whatever the raw scores people get. That means that the closer the set of people to the entire population, the closer their IQ scores will be to 100. Where the set is 30-40% of the population as with college graduates, and many of those colleges have uncompetitive admissions, IQ scores will figure to be closer to 100 by far than in the 1940s where only a small fraction of students went to colleges and many of them were from wealthy families.

There's no debt crisis because lower iq students are in college. There's a debt crisis because the cost of college has soared way beyond inflation.

Also, first, 102 is probably not accurate but even if it was, so what? Second, shouldn't we be educating people of average intelligence? Not every person is a CS or engineering student. Some study mundane fields that still require acquisition of knowledge and training to be competent. Indeed, don't lower IQ people need the MOST instruction and training?

Lets be real, if a kid is not "college material" then he isn't electrician or plumber material either!

A-students go on to get advanced degrees meanwhile B-students go on to work for C-students.

common sense suggests a near universal attainment like HS diploma (80-something%) might be near the intellect mean. common sense suggests a less universal attainment (38%) would be above the mean.

i think some of you have confused "student" with "graduate." lot of people start, less finish.

there has been a lot of growth in Second Rate State and jucos. you open the doors wider it starts to look more like the rest of us. do i believe it literally mirrors the country? no. HS would. i buy every half cooked juco kid who couldn't pass remedial college algebra and continue might be near average.

do i believe college graduates are average smart? hell no.even the study you cite argues good, selective schools wouldn't be average smarts.

if you think harvard kids are idiots because some study you read came up with an average IQ number for canadian college students, you need college.

to underline a semantic gulf here, the OP headlined it "graduate," the study said "student." i have quite a few buddies who started college then didn't finish. i think the graduation rate of those who start is like 62%. and a big chunk of folks don't start so the total is like 37%.
