It goes both ways. How many potential world class 800m runners have the specific athletic abilities needed for soccer? Some posters seem to think talented 800m guys would choose to play D2 soccer instead.

As for the fight, Fury absolutely sucked. His punches were slow and he looked like a deer in headlights. He had taken a year off and looked out of shape. Ngannou mostly just kept his hands up and threw punches without much behind them.

Doping controls in track are much more stringent than in soccer. Controls in boxing aren't great but they're almost non-existent in the UFC now that they left USADA and started their own testing program. Ronaldo was walking around looking like an amateur body builder.

If a rando journo can run 2:03 after 12 month's training, it's surely plausible that a 0.0000001% genetic athletic freak like Ronaldo or Mbappe, who have spent their entire lives essentially doing 800m type training, could run sub 1:45 after 12 months focus.

You’re assuming the there’s an overlap between having elite talent in the 2 sports. Many guys in the major team sports in America are .000000% genetic athletic freaks, but I seriously doubt any could be elite 800m runners.

They're trying to down vote us but idc, if I got my nationally ranked local hs team to train for a year, there would be some amazing track talents that would be produced. And I'm getting a future sub 1:50 guys out of that pool, and maybe even a team that would challenge to qualify got NXN. So now imagine actual professional soccer players with freak level speed.

Of course there is. Being able to run fast repeatedly over 90 minutes is a major part of the skillset of a soccer player. It seems widely agreed in the past on this forum that that skill translate best to 800m running out of all the distances. I created this thread because an MMA fighter arguably beat the boxing heavyweight world champion at boxing, in his first attempt, probably training specifically for this for no more than 6 months. As somebody else said here or on another thread, a triathlete beating Jakob over 5K would be closer to what Ngannou did, but then again, soccer is so much more widely played, attracting the best athletic talent, because it pays 1,000 x more than athletics.

Why is Ronaldo now playing in Saudi Arabia instead of for Real Madrid? He's still only 37. It's because his speed (running speed) has diminished a little. Not his technical skills with the ball, just his speed and fitness. So obviously that is a major component of a soccer player's skillset.

Ronaldo is 97 speed with other 90+ attributes. Not even the fastest Ronaldo.

There are quite a few 99 guys that aren’t as well rounded. And yes they would be in the Olympics if that were more lucrative
