Greta Karenauskaite of CBU 9:26.88 lasst year ended up losing to Markezich in Austin.
Yeah, now I see who Awsi is referring to.
I was confused when Awsi mentioned Watment, who is now a professional, as well as Coburn and Frerichs, I assumed that he was referring to potential candidates for the US team.
Height? Allie O is the shortest woman in the NCAA and she won steeple titles. Gear is 5'4". Quick hips are required. Height can be a disadvantage because many tall runners don't recover quickly after jumps.
A lot of steeplers are taller... Allie O is more the exception. Frerichs, Coburn, Boreman, Quigley, etc. Hurdlers too.
That event makes the most sense for her. It rewards her front running style. The distance fits. The American roster is very weak right now, with Coburn aging, Frerichs injury ridden and Wayment not making any progress.
Off the top of my head Valby on the collegiate level would have to deal with Markezich and the Lithuanian girl. That would be intriguing with Valby and the Lithuanian battling for the front with Markezich stalking.
I've always believed that more middle distance types of that level should switch to steeplechase. Otherwise Valby is going to spend her entire career getting badly out kicked over the final lap, just like Monson.
Wayment ran 9:11 in June in a Florence DL meet. True, she has struggled since but IIRC, she had some injury issues. I would not write her off yet.
Who it the "Lithuanian" that you are speaking of? Krissy Gear? If it isn't Gear, you neglected to mention her. Gear is a 9:12ish steepler.
And why would you ever think that Markezich would be behind Valby in a steeplechase?Markezich is a 9:17-18 steepler. Valby isn't going to be competing with her right out of the box in an event that she has never competed in. I like Valby a great deal and she is a tremendous talent but I don't see her making a possible transition to the steeple while she is still at Florida. All of this talk started just because she posed in a few pictures while leaning on a hurdle that wan't even a steeplechase hurdle.
Not to derail the thread, but I could see any of the NC State runners, KT, Same Bush, or Kelsey Chmiel, possibly competing in the steeple. They don't have the height that steeplers are normally known for but not all steeplers are tall - ie, Ceili McCabe & Kayley DeLay, for instance. Also, the steeplechase does require a bit more athleticism than other distance events and KT in particular is a decent athlete.
Would be really interesting to see Tuohy in the steeple with her 8:35 indoor 3k speed and overall athleticism. Maybe when she turns pro.

Mahala Norris from Air Force Academy. 2021 NCAA champion in the steeple. She is 4’11. It is possible.

Valbymania fans are hoping for an appearance at this week at the Nuttycombe XC meet to display her tan and early season dominance to instill fear into the hearts of NCAA runners everywhere for Expectations of Great Things to Come!!!

I wonder if she has ever run on a wet soggy course, with some hills, in cool weather.

Wat athleticism? She has done nothing but run circles around a track for 10 years.
Sydney Masciarelli was a 1000-point scorer in basketball, Allie Ostrander played basketball in high school, Emma Coburn played both basketball and volleyball in high school, Addy Wiley was all-conference all four years in soccer and also played basketball, Courtney Frerichs played soccer, was a triple jumper, and was also an outstanding gymnast.
That is called athleticism. Of all the college non-steeplechasers right now who could crush the steeple it would be Wiley.

Oh, the sensitive little Wiley fan has reared his head - always needing to mention Wiley fans always need to interject whenever KT is being discussed or when their princess isn't being discussed. It's like the little baby..."HEY, look at me, look at me.!"
KT did, in fact, play soccer. And believe it or not, distance running is not the most athletic endeavor. There is also a way that people carry themselves and it makes it fairly obvious to discern their level of athleticism.

Please stop hijacking this thread about NCAA 5k Champ Parker Valby with your bizarre fanaticism about NCAA 1500m 7th placer and 5k DNSer Katelyn Tuohy, as well as your condescending comments about 4:03 1500m Addison Wiley.
Valby will win XC title if she can just hold off Tyynismaania and Doorbellis Lemongole.

I think you forgot someone. To win, Valby will also have to successfully hold off Tuohy. Just like last year. Oh, wait…
