They aren’t wrong to be upset. It was a dumb take. The NBA is the best basketball league in the world, filled with the best players from around the world. A FIBA world championship means less than an NBA title. NFL would be a fair league to target with that take, though.
Hasn't the USA/NBA lost to Argentina, Greece, and Spain the last couple of World Championships?
If NBA wasnt the biggest basketball corporation in the world, you could easily make an european team out of current nba players that would smash any roster every year, doncic giannis markkanen jokic, not hard to find 5th player when you have such greatness

Jesus man what's with you guys, the NBA is different than the USA...
The NBA is made up of players all over the world but for the Olympics and world championships the countrys compete...
The NBA is the best league in the world and in terms of a league winner they would be the best in the world. But when they say world champions it's just a thing they are making up in the moment it is not official or anything...
You can hold a tournament in your driveway and say the winner is the world champion if you want...
And the USA has by far the most international championships although yes they have been beat on occasion
The NBA is obviously the best league in the world. There's no argument there. There's tons of international players. So no he's not really right...
in the context of the NBA, which is what Lyles was referring to, world champion means the best team in the league. has absolutely nothing to do with which countries the players are from.
would it make you feel better if the Denver Nuggets beat Real Madrid too?
edit: replied to the wrong post. I agree with you.

I don't know man I remember those world championship Chicago bulls. Tell me what team on the planet was beating them? Remember the announcer would always yell out the world champion Chicago bulls...
I don't remember anyone arguing with the announcer when they turn the lights off and the stadium went wild.. seems like a lot of European players and African players and even a few Asian players bringing some Kung Fu to the league...
Plus, he had nothing to loose anyway. Look in the comments of any post about track and field on any major sports account - only thing the top comments say are "Not a real sport" or "Bolt better BTFO".
He has literally nothing to loose and all the more to gain by putting his name out there."
All us sports fans get how this all works, nobody should care about that World Champion thing, it's no different than calling the Olympic decathlon champ the worlds greatest athlete, Hell put him out on an NFL field and he'd get destroyed.
Best if Noah just sprints, doesn't seem to get how to work attention.
I agree. Track gets too much publicity and attention, better keep it quiet and let the NBA have its share of the limelight. Plus it's better that he not be too bombastic. Think of the last sprinter to win the 100/200 double, Usain Bolt, he got attention because he kept his head down and just sprinted.
Lol, the first time Lyles gets mentioned at this World Champs by the mainstream sports accounts is with this quote not with his 3 golds. This is why media availability is so important, quotes generate discussion and interest amongst fans, good and bad.
Hope Lyles capitalizes on this with a huge performance in Zurich while there is actually a modicum of attention on this sport.
Im surprised at all these hot takes. Lyles makes a valid point.
The MLB calling their championship “the World Series” and the winner “world champions” when japan literally beat the USA in the world championship, is weird. Many of those Japanese players still play domestic. Would the top MLB team beat the top Japanese team? Very, very likely, but its not a sure thing.
you dont see the winner of the premier league or uefa champions calling themselves world champs. Even though, its the modt competitive league and they are very likely the best team in the world.
everyone is taking a very uneducated & american PoV.
