I don't think it's asking too much to have a broadcaster who not only has credible experience, but who is also a runner and has a respect/appreciation for the sport.
A great example is the play-by-play voice for Georgia Tech, who not only has a lot of experience (he's also done NBA work ), but can also throw down .

I'm guessing he feels connected to the sport, would describe the action with excitement, and most importantly, would treat the athletes with respect. Why wouldn't USATF want to utilize someone like him?

I like John Anderson on interviews and observations. His wise cracks are sometimes amusing.
I don't think he should be doing solo play by play, especially on shorter events. Too much dead air and lack of enthusiasm. The networks like to use replays of big events with excited announcers. Check out Anderson's call of the Tokyo women's 400 hurdles final compared to the Diffey version.
Just count your lucky stars that you don't have to live the Eurosport experience, where the same guy who just commented 3 hours of tennis is back after a commercial break to comment another 3 hours of triathlon, with no preparation and no knowledge.
