400 hurdlers have a long history of overstating their upside at 400 flat. The public takes it even further. Sydney is somewhat different category because she can indeed with global medals including gold. But the notion that she could threaten the world record was always lunacy squared.
Taking it out fast was the best strategy. But she was already crashing well before reaching the 300 mark. The NBC version was particularly laughable because the play by play guy Paul Swangard started exclaiming that Sydney was flying...several steps after she'd already begun to stall and Paulino was reeling her in. This was late stages of the turn. Sydney was still in good shape entering the turn. Once she was beyond the midway point of the turn she couldn't win unless Paulino fell down.
I thought it was very apropos that two legitimate all time greats tested different distances in Paris and further cemented their legend, while the hurdles girl attempted a spinoff event and ended up carrying the piano the final 20 meters, to borrow a swimming reference.
I guarantee Sydney and Bobby were stunned at how that home stretch played out, although they'll never admit to it.
The big loser may have been Femke Bol. Sydney probably would have pursued 400 flat in Budapest if she hung on well and ran 49 low or thereabouts. Now the fear/embarrassment element is present.
