"Ingesting large amounts of Sodium will make you several pounds heavier"
it seems like once a week, i respond to someone by saying that is one of the dumbest things i've ever read on this board. this post puts the rest of those guys to shame.

There are good abstracts from another poster.
I will point out that the amounts are quite large in order to get an ergogenic effect. You might get sick from the ingesting even before the race.
The prevalence of puking or explosive diarrhea is real. A professor of mine in grad school did several studies with bicarb loading (sodium citrate seems less "volatile").
Lastly, from an anti-doping perspective, screwing around with pH can cause your urine to become too base. That can be considered a masking agent and cause sanctions if one is subject to doping control.

I will say it again fool.
Ingesting large amounts of Sodium Bicarbonate will make you very thirsty - you will retain several pounds of extra water.
I used to eat 3-4 tablets of antacid (the candy flavored stuff... yum) before 5k and 10k my senior year of college. Worked wonders and I crapped as much as usual.
Seems like it's a simple titration in the blood and muscles.
Make sure to follow with ample water.
To all you sodium haters: try sodium pentathol, it'll make you several pounds lighter.
its not a titration at all. Its a buffering effect
That is a drop in the bucket compared to the quantities in the studies that have been shown to be effected. I do not think 3 to 4 tablets would have the effect one is seeking; it might settle the stomach from acidity that comes along with nerves and that certainly could be beneficial.
Crack is made by mixing cocaine, water and baking soda. Mix all three in a spoon, heat off the water, and form the white residue into little pencil eraser-sized $5.00 rocks...
voila' you gots you some CRACK!
In typical Letsrun fashion......WHY DON'T YOU JUST TRAIN HARDER RATHER THAN TRY TO FIND AN EASY FIX!!!! Is puking and taking a dump mid race worth it....I really don't want to have another thread like this one

about your next baking soda adventure.
This is so wierd, I've been thinking about trying this out for a while, but I wasn't gonna post it so everyone else would get the same idea, therefor you should delete this post immediately. Horse trainers use it too, they call it a milk shake. I heard, as other people have said, it makes you shit. A lot.
think about this for a second. This is the stupidest f***ing idea i've ever heard.
You ingest baking soda 15 mins bofore you run. It oges into you throat and then where?
a)your bloodstream
b)your stomach
c)you muscles
for anyone who hasn't had 2nd grade level anatomy, it goes to
b) your stomach.
Now this question is more advanced
What does your stomach contian a great deal of?
a) poo
b) gold
c) stomach acid
The answer is (c) stomach acid! (by the way, it is a very strong acid with a pH around 1-2)
Now, lets see what happens when we add sodium bicarbonate to stomach acid
HCO3- + H+ H2CO3 CO2 + H2O
So, the more sodium bicarbonate you add, the more you'll push the reaction to the right (i.e producing assloads of CO2 and burping). The buffering action will never make it past you stomach.
the reaction should have reversible arrows between the H+ ion and the H2CO3. they didn't show up for some reason.
It is illegal and for a reason. It seems to work. If you fill geletin capsules(readily available from any natural food store) with baking soda and injest 8-12 capsules about 45 minutes before a race you will notice a markedly more gentle lactic acid build up. I can't say it made me run faster, I'd like to think it didn't, but it was a much more pleasent race with the soda than without it. I understand this is not scientific so dont bother flaming me. I am just speaking from my impression/experience. It may give you gut wrenching bowel distress as it did to a teammate of mine but I have never had any problems.

in that case, i've got some snake oil to sell you that'll amke you run at leat 2 min faster for 5k

well, i am willing to risk a massive shit for a fast time
i think i am gonna try it
I tried it once. I wanted to see if it worked - this was well after my competitive days were over.
I really loaded up and I made it down the elevator of my hotel, felt a rumbling in the bottom of my bowels, and thought, "maybe I should go back upstairs to my room rather than out for a workout, just to be on the safe side."
You've heard the term projectile vomit, well, this was projectile diarrhea with extreme prejudice.
Absolutely frightening really - I lost so much water out of my body that I was shocked.
I was weak as a kitten all that night. I went to watch a track me and every thing I drank felt like an elixer fom above. I was thirsty for a week.
I used to talk a couple of Alka Seltzer maybe an hour before racing and it seemed to help, could've been a placebo. But I set all of my PRs after dosing on the Alka Seltzer. I never got sick.
hey retards...,Get an education before you try and talk down to others. Why does vomiting cause metabolic alkalosis? Answer: loss of HCL Normally when the cells in the stomach excrete HCl they inturn secrete bicarb back into the blood. Farther down the GI, in the duodenum, the intestine secretes bicarb to neutralize the low pH. The secretion of bicarb in the duodenum will be accompanied by a concomittant secretion of a hydrogen ion back into the blood stream. The process occuring in the stomach and in the duodenum are opposite one another and maintain pH neutrality. If the HCl is lost due to neutralization (bicarb ingestion) or via vomitting, then the process in the duodenum will not occur and you get alkolosis. How is that for a second grade education?

Which it one reason that Sodium Phosphate is often prefered (it's an ingredient in Phosphagen for example), usually advisable to test your response before using it in competition.
