Guys who win races at some point or another during the race make aggressive moves like this, it’s more glaringly obvious at the end. Breaking someone’s stride or killing their momentum especially right before they kick is probably the best time kinda like what wightman did to Jakob in the final 180 of the WC 1500m. So I guess if it’s in the rules okay, but moves like this is how people win races and it’s part of the sport it’s just less obvious when it’s in the middle of a race

I agree that impeding a runner trying to pass you in this way should be against the rules.
But penalties in track are extremely harsh.
You either keep the result (a win in this case) or are completely disqualified from the race.

The penalty should be losing a place. Award the other guy with a win, but give second place to the penalized runner. (keep their times as is. That’s what they ran)

The way it is, the third place runner is awarded second and the fourth finisher gets third, and they weren’t impeded at all.

You might think that. But if the penalty for Anderson is second place, which is what he would get by not impeding Bizimana, you are basically telling him: if you cheat, you will not lose anything. Imagine that the penalty for stealing was simply to return the money to its owner. What would keep you from trying any time? This is why penalties have to be harsh. Anderson may think twice before doing it next time.

I think the DQ is dumb - Chelimo wasn't DQ'ed so he should be fine. Also, he should have been demoted to 2nd instead of bumped out

Not much in it to warrant a DQ for me, but whatever.

Freezing, frigid take. It's one thing to speed up while someone's trying to pass you on the curve to make them have to accelerate and run a little extra, it's another to make it physically impossible to pass you without DQing you. If someone is allowed to go out of their way to block you, you should be able to trip them.

I think is the way the rules should be enforced just as I did at the US championships. And yes the OSU guy's move in the 3000 might have been a little questionable too

Anderson never looks back between the final curve and the finish line and had a huge lead prior to the final curve. He either had no idea anyone was so close and simply ran a horrible line, or he impeded intentionally based on the sound of the approaching runner. Probably the former, not that it should really matter in regard to the DQ.

I was rooting for Navasky Anderson because you don't see a lot of top level Jamaican 800m runners, but he deserved the dq. USATF permitted this tactic with Chelimo to an extreme level, out to lane 4-5. Here he moved more sharply to cut Bizimana off and the latter fell at the end, making it seem more dramatic even if he didn't actually touch him. It's about time they are drawing the line. After all, the rules are clear and yet they've been allowing people to veer from their line in lane one all the way to lane two, three, even four to stop anyone from passing. Just apply the actual rule and let the runners know in advance that it applies.

No. He still may have won if he ran a straight line.
If you want to win and know you will be penalized by drifting out, you’re not going to drift out.

The way it is now, it’s extremely rare to be DQed for running wide. It’s worth the risk.
Penalize someone one place but enforce it regularly and that will stop runners from drifting.

I’d rather use a sports analogy than a criminal law analogy.
If you commit a penalty in football, you are penalized in yards. You don’t get disqualified from the game.
You can even still win if you’re penalized.

Really bad comparison. In football you stack 'wins' (points) throughout a set time period, whereas running only has one single opportunity to win, therefore an infraction that alters that lone opportunity should be a DQ. Infractions during a multi-point team sport that is played out over a very long time period are much less important. There's no other fair way to do it. Gifting the offending athlete 2nd place is no good because it's very easy to imagine a situation where a drifting athlete impedes two (or more) athletes and simply guessing what would have happened had the rules not been broken is asking for trouble.

yeah unfortunately that's not how psychology works. it's been shown in study after study that harsher penalties do not affect behavior.

You are absolutely right but in the "track world" some people don't know what racing really is! Why make it easy to get by? Blow by me!
