I can't tell whether we're talking about someone who's not run at all when you say "starting from scratch" or someone who's been doing 60-70 a week.
Anyway, it got me to thinking that I was never training for a marathon yet always training for a marathon. I was just training for whatever races came along. If I'd been at a 60-70 mpw time in my life and was looking at a marathon 44 weeks away I'd probably have been looking at getting my mileage up for most of that time and doing various races along the way. I'd stop trying to add miles maybe six weeks out and bring the distance down but at a faster pace (which should happen naturally because I'd be stronger because of the bigger miles I'd got used to) and do a lot of sharpening races. I never found intervals helpful and wouldn't worry about them. Races were my best sharpening.

I wanted to know what they would do if starting from scratch, but I am at 60-70 miles a week currently. I just wandered if it’s just a matter of running as many miles as you can between 5:55 to 6:05 for 44 weeks
