Anyone not realizing that a decathlete has to be first choice is not doing the math.

This is true, but it’s sort of boring.
Are all the athletes on the team theoretically entered in every event (though they may not score if there is no mark available), or is it being scored as just one athlete from the team entered per event. Selecting the team for depth vs breadth is not the same.
14 feet will place in LJ and 40 minutes in 10k. That's why Eaton has to be on team.

Bekele, Rai Benjamin, Michael Johnson. I imagine I can win the 200/400/400h/5k/10k with these guys vs anyone else's picks.
I chose Michael Johnson last because he had a lot more races than the other guys, so his 7th best times are still probably quite good.

Very true. The best team might be 2 decathletes and a distance runner. I suspect it makes a difference if everybody on the team is eligible for every event or just one team member per event.
Carl Lewis, Will Claye, Michael Johnson

Isn't clear to me if this is a dual meets or a 10 way national champ. Or the scoring.
But yeah a Dec, a distance guy with 800-10k times, and some sprinter with 100-400 times. Bonus points if you find a guy with a TJ/400m hurdles time. Is the first thought.
The second thought though is that the Dec guys aren't going to score many points when 5 guys pick 100/200/400 guys like Kerley. You might end up a lot of 4ths and not a lot of points.
Guys like Erick Walder might clean up the jumps for you. Find a similar shot/discus guy and try to win the event with like 40 pts.
If Crouser is eligible, he is a way better discus thrower than Kovacs. (By almost 7m), and he has a decent javelin mark. (61m). Kovacs has a HT mark better than Crouser's JT, but HT is not in the OP's meet.
Too bad we cannot choose Crouser.
If there is a women's contest, Maggie Ewen would be my pick for the thrower.

3000 sc is missing too. Inclusion would strengthen inclusion of Jakob on the team.
Kovacs will beat all of the decathletes and non-decathletes I've seen listed here at all of the throws. Holloway will win the 110mHH and 400mIH and run 44 in the 400m, along with something better than his 10.21 100m pr and possible low 20 in the 200. He can also place well in the jumps. Jakob will make up for his 1:46 800m with 3:28/12:40s/26:30s. I was assuming one of the three athletes in each event--or maybe more if they can score.
When did Jakob run 12:30s? This is not about what the athlete might do, it is about what they have actually done.
Excuse me, I meant 26:30s for Jakob. Holloway has not run 44 outside of a relay split. Same concept.

I think yours is the best approach I’ve seen so far. I’m surprised nobody has selected Said Aouita. He’d be on my team along with Michael Norman and (to be different) Gerd Kanter.
If there are still less than 10, here are mine (I followed directions and didn't look):
1. Bernard Lagat
2. Ashton Eaton
3. Michael Norman
Go USA!
Joe Kovacs
Ashton Eaton
Eliud Kipchoge
