That makes sense. The 800m is at a slower pace because it takes him a while to get to top speed, say 600m. The 1600m is faster because he is at his top speed for longer. Obviously he hasn't quite enough volume to sustain it over 5km so slowed down slightly to 8:30 miles for the last 3 miles. Nothing to see here, fairly sure that some dedicated sprint training to reduce that 600m build up time combined with 150 mile weeks to extend your range will get you into D1 shape.

Were you only applying to PAC 12 schools? Most states only have like 10 kids tops that can run those times. Even in California, which is arguably the deepest state in the country you’d be ranked in the top 20. A 4:13 mile ranked you just outside the top 100 boys in the county this year. Maybe you’re just bad at writing emails, because unless you’re trying to run at Oregon or Stanford the other poster is right saying that a 4:13 gets you on anywhere.
