how can i run a 4:59 mile? what is the training required to do that?
You seem to have a very naive view about training and running. Stop doing time trials and master the basics. Spend 6-8 weeks building up your easy mileage to ~40ish a week, 50 if you adapt well to increased mileage.
Do strides at least 3-4 days a week during this period, maybe in the middle of this block add in a tempo run of 4ish miles. Don’t worry about the pace, a tempo run is a “fast but relaxed/controlled effort” you shouldn’t need a time trial to figure out your paces. Towards the end of this block start to do a fartlek in addition to your tempo run. You shouldn’t touch a track during this time. After doing 2 workouts a week and strides for a a few weeks then you can start to do track workouts.
The most important thing to getting better at running is to run more, run consistently, and do a modest amount of fast running. To many people get in their own head worrying about what training you have to do to hit x time and don’t realize that the biggest hurdle they have is just getting out there and putting in the work.
Now, the pythagoreans mandated that initiates take a 3 year vow of silence before being allowed to speak at meetings. The idea was that before three years of listening had elapsed initiates had nothing to add to their discussions.
I propose that you take a vow of silence until this “base phase” of training is complete. You can lurk but you cannot post. Once you have completed this, and only then, can you post again asking for training tips. The idea here is that you aren’t contributing anything to these boards by asking questions that have been asked a million time by a million different people. Once it is complete you will feel more like a “real runner” and you will have a better understanding of what people talk about on these boards, and you might have something valuable to add. If you can’t complete it then this place was never meant for you.
