After telling a guy at my office (when I worked in New York) that I ran the 800 a few times indoors when I was 19 and my best time was 1:52, he laughed and told me that I wouldn't have come close to making his nephew's high school 4x800 team. Apparently his nephew ran a 1:51 and was the first alterate on his high school 4x800 team in New Jersey. He said that the fastest guy on their team ran 1:47 and they had two other guys break 1:50. He also stated that "1:48 runners are a dime a dozen in New Jersey". I didn't talk back too much to him since I was just an intern and he was a senior engineer but I did mention to him that the average time for the high school RECORD in the 4x800 was 1:53 and change, so his story about having a team with three runners below 1:50 and the fifth best at 1:51 was complete BS.
