Oh and the former HM champ Janko Bensa (retired now).
I ran with him in my town in training (he trained at that time for 3000m European championship) an aerob beast.
Bensa’s 1:02:00 half in Zurich in 1998 was phenomenal. Long before super shoes.

The training it takes to run 2:18 marathon will set the body up to run sub 15 for 5km, yes I totally believe that. However the training it takes to run sub 15 for 5km does not automatically set the body up to run 2:18 marathon. I've known Olympic 1500m runners who sucked at the marathon. Running great at middle distance is difficult and to be respected and running great at marathon also. Not all runners can do both well. I'm in my mid 50's and recently ran 16:48 for 5km with just 16 months training after 34 years away from running. Search McRun23 on youtube.
That's the point. I as a 8/15 train with 400m runners, we could run a similar 400 but the difference at 1500 is insane. Same during the training, they keep up on 200m repeats, but when the 400m repeats are being done, they are dead.
That's why i said long distance runners need more praise.
On top of that, when i train with 5k+ guys, they obliterate me, i keep up at 400m and 800m repeats but at mile repeats they smoke me.
