If a surprising development happens in a sporting event, in any other sport, within minutes the announcers start listing historic comparisons. I get that your website doesn't have the budget or production team of ESPN, but we can't rant about how bad the majors cover our sport when the main journalistic outlet does this.
Imagine if ESPN or FS1 went on Twitter to ask their audience to "give us examples of someone else who hit 4 HRs in one game! I'm sure you guys can think of a few!"

Ok, not all the time, but there are lots of examples from otherr sports of favorites not making the cut in golf, or losing in the first round in tennis, or getting eliminated early in the World Cup or in the post-season playoffs.
Every year in the TDF, one of the pre-race favorites doesn't finish a stage within the time limit, or falls too far behind.
