1. She learns a great lesson re: not being late a. probably won't ever miss a race again b. may also have anxiety about it being forever traumatized
2. She avoids running the 3200 at CIF Finals, Masters and State a. this means she can focus a bit more on the speed of the 1600 b. less stress overall given no waiting around race-day for the 3200 which comes many hours after the 1600 c. with a chip on her shoulder and following a hot early pace from Engelhardt, maybe all this leads to an amazing performance with a sub-4:30 at state
3. She runs the 2 mile at nationals v. Natalie Cook a. having not run the 3200 for over a month, her nervous system will be more excitable for that event b. facing Natalie Cook will bring a lot of electricity c. with sub-4:30 1600 speed Dalia is able to follow the pace set by Cook and then goes around the favorite near the end to take the new national record
4. She now understands The Parable of the Chinese Farmer

She will compete against Sadie Engelhardt in the 1600m at the CA Master's meet one week prior to the state meet. Probably not head to head but in the different heats based on time from the previous Saturday at Division Finals.
My error. There in only one heat at the Master's Meet, with the top 6 of the 12 entrants going to the State Meet so both will go head-to-head.

And if any other runners beyond the top six meet the "at large" standard they also go to the State Meet. The girl's at large standard for the 1600 is 4:52.84. For the boys it's 4:14.91.
Frias (State XC champ in Div 2, Woodbridge Inv champ, and Arcadia Inv 3200 champ) showed up at the starting line 45 seconds after the start of her 3200 heat and was DQ'd. She will not advance in the CIF post season in the 3200. Earlier in the day she won her heat to advance in the 1600. How unfortunate for her and her team. She would have been the favorite to win the 3200 at the state championships. Now she can focus on her showdown with Sadie Engelhardt (freshman at Ventura HS who has set several national freshman and age 15 records in both the 1600 and 3200).
That is unfortunate. But I suppose she would have picked one of the two (either at finals or masters) in any case. Luckily she still has the 1600, which should be a great matchup.
The prep cal track write up says there was a protest preceding her dq. Wonder which team protested.

Bad for Frias because she could have easily won the 3200. Good for fans because now Dalia can't skip the 1600 at the state meet because it's her only event. Frias vs Engelhardt in the 1600 is going to be great!
She knows the order of events (they haven't changed in many years). She knows her race is after the boy's 200. She should have checked in during the 200 heats.
A lot could have happened, so pure speculation. But a few things I don't understand: why are high school meets so stuck on rolling schedules (besides too many people involved are more concerned with getting finished than quality meets). And as for scheduling, if you have a few years of data regarding prior meets ... especially with all the electronic timing, etc, you know when heats and races usually start, so you can estimate start times pretty accurately so as to avoid a lot of down time.
Having coached in Arizona, it sucks to have athletes sitting out for hours upon hours in a tent on a 100 degree plus day. We used to have them spend time at the mall next door to the state meet venue until it got shut down. If you're going to let them arrive early, you should definitely build in a lot of potential traffic/delay time, particularly as the travel distance increases.
To the post that spun the positive ... that needs to be done more when our student-athletes don't match their expectations. These are all very important things, but at the same time, not life ending, cataclysmic events. And sometimes they are a blessing in disguise.
its gotta sting like hell as a senior knowing you would have basically had a guaranteed state championship as there was no one that could have competed with her in that race. as others note, she will probably take out her frustrations during the 1600 which could be epic. and shes going to Brooks PR so I assume she will run in the 2 mile there along with Natalie Cook. So she will at least have a chance to finish her career by getting a great time there by hanging onto Cook for as long as shes able to.
There is no time schedule for that meet. It just starts at noon and they run events in succession. So you have to be paying attention the whole day.
That's stupid. Even more stupid are meets that have a time schedule for the meet and start events early anyway.
Just make a time schedule and stick to it.
Yeah, I don't understand how swim meets often distribute a timeline in advance and often nail it with sometimes many more heats, and track meet timing is still too often completely unpredictable and designed to wear you down or trip you up.
The race (heat 1) started 45 seconds before she arrived at the starting line. She then went back to the check-in area and was allowed to run in heat 2 (she was entered in heat 1), which she won easily, but was later DQ'd.
Officials on power trips. We see it all the time in HS meets.

What power trip are you talking about? She missed her race.
