OK. Still a bit much IMO. Running 1600, 800 and leg of 4x400 is a tolerable triple, but adding the 8 lapper with very little rest a much different beating, especially if they are all at race-level effort.
Is everyone replying with takes like this doing some elaborate troll joke that I am not picking up on? I feel like I’m taking crazy pills!
high schoolers have been running 3+ events at dual meets since the beginning of time. It’s not a “beating.” We’re talking less than 20 minutes of running over the course of a two hour track meet.
Reasonable minds can differ of course, but not joking and was a pretty rare triple during my time, which was a long time ago. Also not impossible or abusive if properly spaced and used sparingly. Definitely a beating if you are racing all 3, but obviously not as bad if used a a workout. Races (even in low-level dual meets) are special events though and IMO best not to blur the line between working out and racing too often.
You need to get more girls (you're a girl, right?) out for the team that would help so you don't have to triple all the time. Maybe next XC season get more out and then they might run track as well.
I do that basically every meet. Your first two races will be fine, but you'll probably run 20-40 seconds slower than you could on your third race (2 mile). Its not optimal, but you'll be fine
On 4/14/2022, the day this thread was started, Vanessa Alder (yes, that Alder family) running as a junior for Carlisle (PA) HS tripled against State College HS with the following results in order event:
1600 - 1st - 4:58
800 - 1st - 2:18
3200 - 1st - 11:45
Although not Earth shaking, respectable times nonetheless, particularly as a triple in a dual meet.
More interesting, in the same meet State College ran 30 boys in the 800, although none under 2:05. Indicative of T&F being a participatory sport.
The way I see it, you have two choices: 1) listen to your coach, 2) don't and see what happens. Internet strangers need not apply. Still...fwiw, someday you truly won't be able to do this, and I think there is a strong chance that if you do it, you will look back at yourself and think that you were bad@ss. So my vote is for #1.
I did the 1600, 800, 3200 a few times in duel or tri meets. There would be like 5-10min rest between 800 and 3200 lol, it was epic. I was fast enough back then that the 1600/3200 were never in doubt. I may have won all 3 once, I don't remember. The key was not having to sprint finish the 1600, then I would be ok for the 800. Then the 3200m was sit and kick, out in 5:00 finish in 4:50.

so basically she raced the 16/8 and then got some tempo work in during the 3200. this is the approach i'd generally recommend.
