btw, the shoes I'm wearing now I bought because they look nice, not because I need them for elite desk jockey performance.
Right, you bought those shoes because you want to casually wear them not run in them. Youre missing the point here but continue with your burn.
Yes, and many, probably most people who buy running shoes have no plans to run in them. Is there something wrong with that? Do I actually have to be a cowboy to wear cowboy boots (I don't btw)?
I more often see grandmothers in Hokas. That isn't mean to disparage Hokas as a running shoe (I've never tried them), just observing that old people seem to like the cushioning in Hokas.
I'm a huge Hoka fan and have been wearing them about 7 years. Ran in my brand new pair of Cliftons yesterday.
But this is true.
Gone are the days where you could assume someone is a runner because they're wearing Hokas. They are extremely popular with nurses and others who are on their feet all day. Hoka recognizes this and sells lots of all-black or all-white shoes.
You also see them on old people or heavy people in the grocery store who are struggling to walk. They were obviously prescribed orthopedic shoes and I think some doctors are specifically specifying Hokas. Mostly Bondi (not all Hokas are Herman Munster shoes, btw).
I'm a big basketball fan and have noticed many refs wearing black Hokas. Seems a weird choice for moving quickly on a court, but they must work for them.
Our town only has ON, Hoka and Salomon for sale. I've tried them all, every model. The ONs are great looking, perfect for the gym, very uncomfortable for running, deadly on wet or ice, and pick up rocks - pinecones - twigs more often than the donald lies.
I had a pair of ons 4.5 years ago on the recommendation of my local running store and actually found they were pretty comfortable and had good reaction but the pebbles getting caught in between the foam made me get rid of them. It was crazy and very noticeable like having a rock in your sock.
newton lugs are legit its basically a 'metatarsal bar' (used in orthotic shoe modification) that creates a very prominent forefoot rocker. the problem is that the rest of the shoe is subpar. also, nike air zoom units in the forefoot work the same, but better. though the new gravity+ actually rides pretty good since they added a plate for more stiffness
on's foam structure is just a visual gimmick because a foam midsole can't redirect forces in any meaningful way anyway due to point elasitcity

I really enjoyed the pop on toe-off I got from my Newtons. The uppers worked fine for me.
Seems like they both have banked on a gimmick to set themselves apart from other brands. Hard to believe Newton is still in business.
Tried Newton running shoes years ago, but they hurt my feet and never bought another pair.
Doubt I’ll ever try ON running shoes unless LRC sends me a free pair for winning the post of week.
Newtons...possibly the strangest shoe I ever experienced. My LRS tried to sell me on a pair of them once. The lugs on the soles were incredibly stupid. Took them on a test run, hated nearly every step. Went back to the shop barefoot, carrying them. Told the clerk No.
ON seem like they would be good post-race shoes for walking around in. i had a pair of altra instinct 1.5s that were fantastic for that person. apart from the clouds, the shoes look similar to me.
I dont know what shoes does ON sell in US, but in Europe they are very popular. I have 7 pairs of ON cloud surfer 5, but the newer model doesn't fit my leg well so if you guys have any recommendations for new shoes i would appreciate it.
I've known a few good runners who wore Newtons. Nobody runs fast in On. Even On sponsored runners race in other brands' shoes. Their target demographic is Todd & Margo from Christmas Vacation.
