Have you met these youngsters who enlist in the Army? They are usually the dimmest, pudgiest, and laziest of the bunch. It's a sad thing that the army tricks these dummies into thinking that there in any kind of honor or pride in the military, and it is even sadder that many of these recruits will fail to hit those marks.
I'd reckon the average student who is accepted into a top-100 academic university in the US could outperform military recruits in the deadlift and two-mile. It takes dedication and work ethic to earn those acceptances, whereas joining the military just means that you aren't good enough for literally anything else.
It takes courage to defend your country and many just don't have the balls or the inclination to help others... As we see from current events war could break out at any time.
What happens if you run it fast than the low end of the range? Sorry, you are too good for the military?
Sorry that I wasn't clear in my earlier post.
When I was in the Army (early 90s), a soldier had to score a minimum of 60 points in each of the three events (pushups, situps, and two mile run) to pass and the goal was to get a maximum of 100 points in each event. (It looked good on an officer's performance review if they scored 300 on the PFT. You were eligible to wear a patch for "Physical Fitness Excellence" if you scored 90 in each event.)
For the 2 Mile Run, to get 60 points and pass, the cutoff was 16:00. For 100 points (maximum score), you needed to run 13:00 or under. If you ran 10:00, you still got 100 points.
The average soldier does not do much fighting anymore. The current model for the US armed forces is for JSOC to lead combat missions by having special forces and contractors do the actual fighting while the soldiers merely provide a support role. And you do not have to have any physical fitness to operate a drone or fire missiles off a destroyer. As the Russians have found out, actual man to man combat is too costly given all the advances in weaponry. Battles are lost an won with technology, air power and then some special forces to sweep up what is left or to take out some command and control.
Maybe the out of shape fat bodies in U.S. Army is why U.S. military could not pacify 5'6" illiterates in sandals in Afghanistan.
Maybe the out of shape fat bodies in U.S. Army is why it took U.S. military almost 12 years from 2003 to pacify teenage malnourished guerrillas in Iraq.
U.S.M.C. is small. U.S.M.C. was not built to take on large size nations like Afghanistan and Iraq for long sustained fights. That's the Army. Out of shape fat guys in the Army is a problem.
What do you do for a living P. Roy? Stick to what you know!

I was in during the mid 90s too, and I know for a fact the max for 2-mile run was 11:54 and the "pass" (60 points as you said) was indeed around 16, but I don't think it was exactly that. The run was always "my event" so I took it serious (for a non-runner). I could max the run pretty easy but I really had a hard time maxing the other two, but I did eventually. Once. Then never quite managed to do 300 again.
When I went to basic training about 30 years ago, I believe the standard was 16-min in the two mile and about 40 pushups to pass. Sit-ups were the only other event. Times have changed.
I shudder to think about us going to war with anyone. About the only thing in our favor is that our weaponry is now designed so that the users don't have to figure anything, just push buttons. The fitness level of the average American continues to plummet, whether as new recruits or earlier, when in grade school. The other day I passed a nearby junior high. The teacher was doing a fitness test. Over half the class just walked. About another quarter started jogging for half a lap, and then walked. The remainder jogged slowly except for two kids who actually ran at a decent pace.

What do you do for a living poster? I don't tell you how things are run at your job. As a tax payer, if you are a tax payer, you have a right to voice your opinions on budgets and deployments. You are another clown with this button pushing nonsense. Most conflicts U.S. gets involved with are anti-guerrilla operations. Anti-guerrilla operations involve regular U.S.M.C. infantry and regular Army troops on the ground mostly. The number of special forces are very small. U.S. military places Marines and Army personnel on foot very often. Stop it with this button pushing. Are there drones piloted from SW U.S. but flown in Africa & Asia? Yes. That is only a part of what occurs.

Yes that was the 3 event APFT, the new test is a lot more involved.
20+ min is still very frickin slow. Most Soldiers are running 1-2min slower on this test because its 6 events.

The mil guys may be slower than the runners here but most of them probably have strong core and upper-body strength. The USMC PFT tests lifting and other field-like simulations rather than just the run I think, they changed it.
They need to bring back The Stan Leprotti PE Classes. I heard that only 30% of High School Students could pass even the Minimum standards of Special Ops Seal Team 6 Green Berets Marine Recon Air Force Pj's etc
I think If President Viden said lets get people healthier and bring back the Stan Leprotti PE Classes that had success with almost all students, I am sure that is one of the very few things Republicans and Democrats would Unanimously or nearly Unanimously agree on

Freedom is not free!
Soldiers die, kids accepted into a top-100 academic universities don't.
