I think you guys are forgetting about somebody. Simply by the numbers, on the men's side it's Bekele's 26:17. Even better than 19.32...and equivalent to about 1:37 in the 800.

MJ's 19.32 and women's 3:50 1500m.

Sotomajor going over eight feet in the high jump. Go out and measure it against your wall. Some people can't even jump and touch 8'. That's like saying someone could't ride a bike faster than 1:41 or 26:17.

Until you have ever run a top-class 800m, or run against top 800m runnners, you have absolutely NO IDEA how fast a 1min43 800m is, let alone a 1min41.11. That record is AMAZING. And if it "comparativly" is poor, than it just shows what shyte running calculators etc are.

I think the 200 is about as perfectly fast as any human will ever run.

The best record ever is the 2 miles (7:58) that Komen ran 2 times....

Now, that's mind bogging...

7:20 is equal to a 7:55-7:56 2 mile. the 3k was Komen's best mark

I disagree and always wondered why it wasn't faster. Komen was a 3:46 miler in limited attempts. To slow down 3 seconds/lap, even while running another mile, and run 8-60 second laps, doesn't seem as great as the other records.

that is a pretty awesome performance, her half in the marathon was less than a minute off the world record... by that same standard the men's marathon world record s/b around 2 hours flat!

UR an idiot. MJs 19.32 200m record is the 100m world record broken twice. And he ran it back then. 49 sec laps back to back does sound hard, but it sounds hard right now. If we take your same logic, the 400m world record (MJs too) is 43.18. In order to break that a human would have to basically double 21.5, which according to you is impossible. The basic lesson is times change and competition grows. With more competition in the 800, you will see more people in the 1:41s. I do think that whoever does it is a person capable of not only running a crazy mile, but a 44-point 400.

one record that hasn't been mentioned so far and is probably more untouchable than kip's is jarmila's 1:53. I would call that record the most untouchable and the most doped

Yes, Michael Johnson's 19.32 is faster than the 100m world record run back to back, but you see, when you have more room to sprint, you can pick up more speed. That's why it is faster, and that's why they don't count 4x400m relay times for world records, because people are getting a head start. I would agree that 19.32 is one of the best records, but the 800m WR is much harder to attain, because you have to have a perfect balance of aerobic and anaerobic fitness. You have to be the 400m runner and the miler.

And i think that the fact it took until the final 3 races of the circuit this year for someone to even break 1.44, shows just how hard 1.41 flat is. Someone might one day break 1.40, but it wont be in my lifetime, or my childrens, and it wont be by anyone doing things legit

Guess it depends on YOUR distance to some degree, I'm lovin an earlier Top 10 you mentioned Abe Tomoe

She is still the only women ever to break 7hrs for 100km (next best Ann Transon 7hrs) and she rane 6hr 33min so next best 27min behind so picking nobody will get near it for a hell of a long time.

Also Yiannis Kouros who still holds about the top 16 distances ever run for 24hr and number one 303.5km

Other than that I think Bob Beamons 1968 was the great WR, currently MJ = 200m, chattered it !!

Re Paula R, great run but the womens marathon is a realatively new event and has multiple WRs over even the last 5yrs and will continue to be broken until the womens WR eclipses the mens in the late 2010s, now that will be fun

Ever heard of Peter Elliott? Hardly a name that comes to mind in a discussion about the respective merits of the various world records.

He was a miler/1500 specialist running in the shadows of his far more famous near contemporaries - Cram, Coe and Ovett.

Yet without even training for that specific event, he ran under 1.43 for the 800.

All the fastest times for 800 have been run by 800 specialists.

I imagine that had many of those world class 1500mt runners turn their attention to the 800, they’d lower it to under 1.41.

But as the 1500 is one of track’s blue ribbon events - there’s never been the slightest incentive for any decent miler to concentrate on that distance.

Don’t forget that Ramzi had no difficulty beating the 800 specialists at their own event at the 2005 world champs.

You will find Peter was very much an 800 runner in the mid 80s and only later in his career had more success at 1500. It's true though that when he did his 1:42 that was at the peak of his powers when he was also racing world class 1500s.

Ah so Coe at 1:41.73 really did not win the Olympics 1500 twice then and did not hold the 1500/mile world records either?

True Cruz rarely raced 1500/mile that much but he is well under 4 at the mile.

The relative absence of the 800/1500 type seems to be a more recent thing. Remember Aouita had a go and snatched an Olympic brozne. Ovett was seemingly much more dominant at 1500/mile yet won the 1980 800 Olympics. Kelly Holmes won both in 2004. So if one gold is good, two is better!

However quite why El G never races 800 has always been a bit of a mystery to me. Maybe he was worried about possibly losing...
