There is no incentive for Francis to refuse except that he thinks SCR doesn’t have the character to adhere to his instruction or will create an unnecessary spectacle. The root of the ambivalence towards him in Jamaica is due to his lack of tact, grace and social skills in general. He sees himself as a big deal, but it’s the athletes who get all the credit, which bothers him. A lot of people also mocked his decision to go into coaching and he never got the support from the Jamaican government he felt he deserved, which is why Nike pays his bills. If he trains SCR to take over from ETH, they may not like him, but they will have to respect him, and he will get even more requests from Nike in the future.

As for SCR’s potential, I’m not sure what you mean by “pumped up” nor do I particularly care, but there are obvious technical defects that can be fixed which could potentially make her much faster. First of all her glacial reaction to the gun, secondly a lower more consistent drive phase, thirdly less wasted upper body movement in the maximum velocity phase and lastly better maintenance of her form towards the finish.

She’s only 21 and has just one full pro season under her belt. We have no idea how much speed she can gain just by a bit more physical development and conditioning. She is far from a finished product and has already run sub 10.8 four times. If Francis accepts the job, it is because he knows the potential for greatness is there. However, it will be on his terms and no one else’s. Nike will not be allowed to interfere and Richardson will have to be willing to do as he says, without questioning his authority or becoming a distraction.

The reporter from The Gleaner who broke the story (Andre Lowe) said on Twitter that the athlete in question was described as “not European”, which rules Dina out.

Another description used is “very popular”. You could say it’s a bit vague, but remember track and field is still a niche sport with very few superstars and SCR has been the most talked-about athlete this year, by a distance.

First off, I am not trying to disparage Coach Francis , obviously he knows how to coach. Even through every non Jamaican who has spoke about his coaching has stated you train hard, but the coaching is very basic and btw it is a lot more than the 2 athletes you mentioned. Also, Francis didn't just work with unproven raw talent. Melaine Walker had won at Champs, several junior medals and was an NCAA champ. She like a some athletes came to Francis with a resume.

Statistically, Francis is the worlds greatest coach, no coach in history has taken as many athletes from one level to another level is as shorter period of time. When you look at the amazing improvements FloJo made from 1987 to 1988, which some people cast suspicions upon, Coach Francis has done with several athletes what FloJo did. That is concerning to some! Speaking of Melaine Walker, she can out of a highly touted NCAA program and in less than a year removed from that program and training with Coach Francis, she nearly equaled her 400m dash time going over hurdles. This is an example of what perhaps makes him the greatest coach ever, but I would like to see him do the same thing with a non Jamaican athletes. Coach Mills has had similar uncanny success and just like Francis, has not been able replicate that uncanny success with non Jamaican athletes. - Just saying!
