Fitbit started it. I remember when all the fatties at work got their fitbit's and started comparing their daily step totals. They were all gonna lose so much weight because they were doing 15,000 steps a day. That was at least 5 years ago, they all still wear their fitbits, they are all still fat, but at least they stopped talking about how many steps they take.

Exactly that’s impractical, I used to work comercial construction 8-10 hours days I would average daily 10k-14k steps a day, I used to run min 6 miles a day after work and that would put me in the 20k-25k steps per day averag. Anyone claiming something above that without running is pretty much saying they walk for 8+ hours a day. Highly improbable
It’s very possible. I also work construction10-12 hrs a day and I always have between 20k and 25k at the end of the day.
On my days off I am very active and always hit above 25k.
That person says they don’t own a car and walk everywhere so if they have an active life style and don’t work in an office on top of that, I say it’s more than possible.

With or without running? I don’t track my steps but I’d say it has to be well above 20k. If I included my running it has to exceed 50k. I’ve 30k easily on long runs anyway.
50,000 steps is like 125,000 ft if you're walking (25 miles). If you are walking 20k, that's like 10-12 miles, and then if you are running 30k (and a mile is probably about 1200 strides), that's like 25 more. And so if you are saying your daily average is 50k, you're telling me you travel over 35 miles per day by foot, or close to 250 miles per week?
I love the responses from people like Malmo who seem to be imagining folks literally counting the number of steps they take.
One interesting thing about the steps movement is how life and health insurance companies have started to underwrite movement. There are products out there now that actually reduce premiums based on covering a certain amount of steps on a daily basis. To those of you making fun of the "fatties" think about that for a moment.
Looks like a lot of folks in my range of 20-25k with a few crazy outliers. RunnerSam... I am truly impressed by your ability to literally not move on rest days. <1000 steps!?
Idk dude me and you are getting paid to walk 8+ hours. That’s our livelihood and we have a life outside of it. I just don’t see anyone hitting above 25k step averages of just walking. So this person is willingly walking 10+ hours a day (not even taking public transportation). So they don’t have time to anything in their life if they are hypothetically getting their 8 hours of sleep. That’s no way to live. I’m from a third world country and there’s a lot people probably averaging 30k step a day from working in farms or walking long distances to school/work due to lack of public transportation. That’s no way to live, I just don’t see someone in a first world country voluntarily doing that every day even if they have a physically demanding job. Sure it’s possible in the weekend (going on a long hike) or a day off but not everyday.
22k-23k a day usually.

It's possible but she is lying. She doesn't walk 17.5 miles/day. She said 35,000 steps because using that figure boosts her low self esteem.

I find strange having to justify my active life style on a running site but here we are.
I should have mentioned that I am an hyper active woman, I make up excuses to get out and do stuff even if it’s just walking around.
I am semi retired now so I have a lot of time to do what I want but when I work, I am as active. My work is physically demanding and requires a lot of walking. I fits my personality.
Also, my apologies I lied. I just looked at my data and I average 33 500 steps a day. I have more days between 30 000 and 35000 than I have above 35 000.
But I understand you way of thinking, my numbers seem disproportionate. But think about it, every time you get in your car to get groceries, go to work, visit friends… I don’t. I walk everywhere, it adds up.

Posting the address of LRC posters is a VERY stupid thing to do. Why did you do that and why do you still come here?

I walk everywhere I go. I do not own a vehicle(never have)and I rarely use transit system.
But isn't that like 17 miles a day???

I'll drop it, but you claim you are walking 17 miles a day but you're a cyclist?!

Around that. Right now I am at 21km(should be around 13 miles?) and I’m on my way back out the door to meet a friend on the South side of the city to go for a walk(imagine that!) in the trails close to where she lives. Then I’l walk back home. My days are filled. I like it like that, I haven’t had an injury from walking but I had many from running.

Spin cycling.

Because 17 miles of walking everyday is not enough exercise? You must weigh 85 lbs.!

Some of the turds in my office did a one week step contest. One of the turds would take off her fit bit and shake it to register more steps. She was totally unapologetic about it. She wanted to win and this was how to do it.
This is the state of wellbeing and competition among the general population.
i am only interested in number of steps because time on feet and unnecessary walking can add up to sore feet and niggles for me. its strange, but my feet handle running better than they do standing and walking all day (which i avoid as much as possible). usually around 14-17k steps during the week and weekends are random and depend on where im going out and how long of a long run.
Maybe I can win for crazy low? Without running, it can be as low as 400. When I went to an office, the minimum would be 3000 or so.
With even a little running it's 12000.
18k a day average from over 20k 6 days and then Sunday I'm lucky to break 5k. My stride length is usually about 1.4m so for a 20k run I'll get ~14,000 steps done
I don't take my phone with me when I run so my total steps is always low.
