If it's worth any spit, my times in high school were: 400m 53 sec, 800 2:01, 1600m 4:47.
In my senior year, my last race ended up being terrible at the state meet as I developed an upper respiratory infection and I couldn't stop coughing all over the place. Our medley relay team ended up getting dead last because of me, ran a 2:07 split when I was hitting 2:01's near the end of the season. I went into a severe depression after that, didn't run hardly all summer, then I tried running with the team as a walk-on in college and I was too out of shape to keep up with them, then boom even more depression. Anyways, after a ton of therapy, I moved on to other things in life.
After meeting up with a few friends this past weekend, we talked about high school and athletics and it got me to thinkin, is it even possible? Could I just really hunker down for a few years and train my ass off in the gym and on the road to get there or am I too old/out of shape? I'm in my early 30's is it possible to get this done by my late 30's, early 40's with 7 to 8 years of training under my belt?
Also do you have any tips on training both in the gym and the track for me to get started? I never really had fantastic
track coaches back in the day, so my prior training knowledge isn't the best.
Thanks in advance to all who respond.
Hey dude I had similar times to you in HS. 57, 2:07 and 4:40.
That's too bad a single race to effect you so much but I'm sure now that time has passed you can put it in perspective.
Yes I'd say it certainly is possible. Get your 400 down to 60 first. If you can't run 60 right off the bat, you will have to get there first.
As the other posters have said it depends on your speed to get under 2:00.
I'm 36 and if I broke 2min in my lifetime I'd be happy. I think it is possible. Now whether I"m willing to actually train and do it is another story. I just don't have the drive to do it. I still stay relatively fit. I run about 4 miles a day, five or six times a week.
In perspective I did a 400m on a shale track at the age of 28 in 62.8. That was 11 years after high school and with no special training. Just showed up and did it. I doubt I could run under 65 now. Ran a 5:47 mile 2 years ago with a last lap of about 75, last 200m around 32.
Hell yeah, Greg! Well why not? You already got a good base going, lets get a bunch of 30 something year olds and beat 2 mins left and right! lol
But dang though, you're still pretty quick for just the milage you're putting in. You planning on doing any other races to see where you're at?
