49 400 with no training

You might want to take a crack at the 400 meter intermediate hurdles.

anyone who runs 1:50 should be able to run a 49 400 without much trouble, that's entirely in line with what is expected -- it doesn't make you some 400 savant

You ARE missing something. O.P. posted stating he is NOT a 1:50 800m runner.

got it -- he's a 1:52

point stands, 1:52 is a 970 on the iaaf table, a 49 400 is a 918

figure if he's running 49 HT in flats with no competition, that's probably worth about a low-mid-48

anyway, OP -- you're a speed 800 guy not a power 800 guy, 1500 isn't for you but 400 isn't either

Not true. Fast middle distance and distance runners were beating their pees at every distance on the track when they were young. Houlihan was running 55 in the 400 in high school. Hocker ran 50 and 1:50 in high school.

You did not disprove my statemen with Houlihan racing 55.52 400m at age 18. That pretty much falls in line with what Ovett did, maximizing 400m speed to age 18 by training as a 400m person as a teenager. Houlihan is racing good performances at 5000m. You have no proof Houlihan would not have been a better 800m specialist. We have seen this a lot with U.S. teenagers with good 400m speed. Many U.S. teens choose to skip 800m and move directly to 1500m as their primary event. Eight-hundred metre training is grueling. IMO, both Mary Decker & Mary Cain should have been 800m specialists until at least age 21. Jim Ryun should have been an 800m specialist. Cole Hocker does not disprove my point. I do not see a F.A.T. 400m for Hocker on Athletic.net or World Athletics. If Cole Hocker were a 50.xx F.A.T. 400m lad as is O.P., you have no proof Hocker chose the correct event. Time will tell with Hocker.
