Things like engineering and medicine somewhat use UG knowledge. I know many people learned MCAT material from other fields by themselves in a month of studying on the computer. No need for 4 years of UG.

The prereqs barely help, and some people take these years away, when they're scoring terribly before studying while some take them before taking prereqs because you can apply before then.
Trade schools should also be part of any potential free college plan.

Wasn't it March, 2010 when Deepwater Horizon oil rig malfunctioned? I was in down there in Gulfport, MS at the time. Working in oil industry is more dangerous than being in law enforcement and more dangerous than being in U.S. military. We do not need high schools telling kids the salaries of those who work in coal mines and those who work on oil rigs. Lumberjacks make a lot of money too. If one works long enough as a lumberjack, one will have an encounter with a bear. Lumberjack is a good paying job but is more dangerous than law enforcement and military service. Some will be circus performers and others will be rodeo clowns. It is not the mission of school system to advertise these jobs regardless of pay.

I took the MCAT a decade after most of my prereqs, so I am certainly aware that "some people take these years away." That isn't what is under discussion.
It isn't entirely unusual for people to take the MCAT before completing all of their prereqs. Taking the MCAT without taking any prereqs would be very unusual, and I don't believe that you know many people who have done this.

One student wanted to be an elevator operator but was discouraged by his other teachers who wanted him to go to community colleges in upstate NY. He hated school and had no desire. Fortunately he didnt listen to my colleagues.
A large percentage of kids flunk out of schools as they're not prepared- often students spend their first year taking remedial classes to prepare them for what they should already know. We need elevator operators, orderlies, rig workers, lumberjacks, handymen, garbage collectors etc...

For many college is a scam. Take Rep Cortez for example. She graduated with honors in economics from Boston College. Based on her early manifesto, she has the writing and business math skills of a higher schooler and the concept of tax abatement was beyond her comprehension as she drove high paying Amazon jobs from her district. No wonder she couldn't get a professional job out of college. I am not saying she is stupid. I am just saying that an expensive college didn't do anything for her except provide a diploma. I am sure the Economics Dean at Boston College is glad she stopped using numbers and limits her writing to tweets.
I agree that college is way too expensive and has grown too rapidly in cost. He is also right that some course requirements are a joke and that administrations put heavy pressure on faculty to pass and give high grades. He's also right that we shouldn't be accentuating inequality the way that prestige tends to do. However, his own data shows that higher education is well worth it. He says that they want a ticket to the upper middle class and they get it. A B.A. gets you 65% more than a non-college grad. Masters' degree recipients make 100% more. Making it free would very much help to increase productive investment as college graduates put their earnings into buying homes and other things, rather than paying back college loans. It would also extend college to the lower 50% at much higher rates, making a real contribution to reducing inequality in this country. But at the same time you have to rein in the college administrations, which have been growing rapidly and spending more and more on things that do nothing to improve education or research over the past thirty years.

You are stating you are an educator who gave up on your kids. Do you want a medal? By your response to me, you are an advocate for the trades. There are trade schools. I made no argument to close trade schools. Didn't I state in my first post that electricians & plumbers should most likely be paid more to deal with phony shortage of trade workers? Bill Maher has said he does not like kids. Maher had a show almost 20 years ago, I believe on ABC. Maher is a stand-up comedian. He is reading his audience. Maher made leftist comments on his original show and got fired. Don't act as if Maher makes serious commentary. Increase the pay of dangerous labor jobs and there will be no shortage of labor for dangerous jobs. Oh. Btw., are Oregon & Washington lumber companies coming to high school where you teach looking for lumberjacks? Are West Virginia coal mining companies coming to your location looking for coal miners? Don't believe phony labor shortage propaganda. At nearly every public high school, USMC show up to recruit. It is actually difficult to find about 55,000 new Marines a year to go into USMC.

I can only recount my high school. We had an administrator who's title was "Guidance Consular."
Guess what part of his/her job was? To try to help students find the right career path.
Not every kid is cut out for college.
Also you mentioned how dangerous some blue collar are. Fair point.
But do you know what the most dangerous job in America is?
Commuting or driving for a living, aka 18 wheeler drivers, local delivery drivers ect. Why hell just
this morning I read about 2 San Diego Police Officers who were killed by a wrong way driver on
the freeway. In 2020 there 42,000+ people killed on American roadways.
As an aside, your line about the lumberjacks and the bears made me chuckle!!!
You do realize that lumberjacks are aware of the risks and keep the appropriate firearms on site
to deal with what are very rare occurrences. Seriously, if you were a bear would you run towards
the sound of a chainsaw or head in the opposite direction?
