nordic skiing is significantly more difficult for a beginner than running. I know national caliber cross country skiers who can't break 16:30 in the 5k. You would get drubbed in a ski race.

I hope I don't sound as if I'm bad mouthing XCskiers. I'm simply curious how I would stack up against them in their sport. I know where they stack up against me in running. Same thing with snowshoe racing. Same thing with cycling too.
I'm sure I'd get my butt kicked at first. But, I think that if someone can be a good runner, they can do well at xcskiing, snowshoeing, etc.
So, I've decide to spend the money this winter and get snowshoes. Next winter, it'll be XC skis. Hell, maybe I'll buy a cyclocross bike in the spring.
I was hoping someone might be able to tell me whether you wear regular sneakers when snowshoeing or whether you need special boots to clamp into the snowshoe. I'm not looking to race just to walk around in. Also do you wear special socks or anything like that to keep your feet dry? Thanks.
You can wear anything. I use racing flats.

A true minimalist wouldn't wear any shoes (maybe socks on really cold days). ;-)
BTW, I bought my wife a pair of Dion snowshoes and she loves them (and I sneak them out for myself sometimes).
