You make it sound as if the Oregon duo can simply choose to win the race at the end. Reality will be a cold slap in the face for you and the Oregon duo.
I mean many consider both to be the greatest Oregon duo of all time. It feels inevitable that 2 3.50 milers are going to blow past him the closing stages of a race.
I’m not saying Kiptoo can’t win but he needs to run a hell of a lot faster than his 5k PB to beat them.
I’m interested to see if Kiptoo will stick behind the pacer(assuming there is one) or will he make it a gutsy race and drop a 59 the first lap.
Teare and Hocker do need the NCAA standard, because the qualifying period for D1 is from March 1st to the second Sunday prior to preliminaries for regionals, with the exception of certain conference championship races, so maybe they'll just run for the standard. Still, the opportunity to run a fast time with Kiptoo and Kurgat there might be hard to pass up (my prediction now is that they'll just sit and kick at whatever pace).

Pretty notable that Stanford has five freshman qualifiers already, between Charles Hicks (redshirt sophomore? competed for Britain and was 5th at Euro under 20 xc, a 4:07 mile/8:49 3200m (state record at the time) runner in Florida) at 13:34 and a 13:51 (three others from 13:43-13:45).

Reading comprehension is a gift. That's the national list of time qualifiers.
Regarding who is pacing & why Ben Thomas would have Hocker race an all-out 5k less than two months out from the Trials . . . it's possible Cole is one of the rabbits, possibly guy good enough to take the field through 3k or even 4k.
Also, as noted above, Hocker & Teare's (and Grijalva's) 5k times from Sound Running's Track Meet last December do not count towards this spring's NCAA regional qualifying. However, they do count towards Oly Trials & Oly qualifying. So, Teare's 13:17 from December likely will get him into the Trials as one of the top-24 runners.

No way these guys run that fast. They are there to win the race and whatever that pace might be it will be too fast for some.

Teare's 13:17 is, of course, a Trials qualifier.
However, it's possible the Men's 5k Invite race will have two or even three groups - the fastest group chasing the 13:13.50 Oly standard, another group targeting the 13:25 Trials standard, and everyone else running as fast as possible to get a top-32 regional time.
Maybe that is what OR has in mind for Teare w/Hocker rabbiting .
They are going for Olympic standard. Kiptoo will get everyone out.

Why... because they need it in order to run the 5,000 at NCAA’s. Because the head coach is interested in winning NCAA team championships and needs multiple points from the distance guys in order to do so. Because the head Coach likes the bonuses he gets that are tied to winning NCAA team championships and has proven over the years that takes precedence over individual athletes’ aspirations.
Mark my words, if these guys are able to run Olympic Qualifying standards in April they will be wasted by NCAA’s and the head coach won’t be happy with the assistant coach.

They have legal eligibility to be fair.

considering its a stronger field than the 5k a few weeks ago that produced 3 us qualifying times this seems like a horrible take. its reasonable that some could even get the Olympic standard based on previous performances, but sub 13:20 seems like a given barring unforeseen circumstances.
