So do you think he ran exactly one lap and stopped? My friend was 16, and exceptional track nut, saw how fast Viren was going and began timing. I am not sure if it was after the 5 or 10. I do remember Viren jogging with the shoes over his head but beyond that?
And of course there is ALWAYS the chance there could be a false recollection but at the time it was very real and very impressive.
I ran in the out the store brought version of Tigers which where top shelf at the time. There was a rumor that Viren's shoes were special made, which was not normal back then.

I had a pair of those Adidas Titans. They had no heel whatsoever. Edwin Moses wore spikes very similar to them minus the suction cups.
I found it interesting (info embedded in my earlier reference) that Viren almost did not get to run the 5000m in Montreal due to him holding up his spikes after the 10000m. (I was not tuned into the '76 Olympics back then, so I don't know how big of a story that was in the media at the time.)
Do you think it is possible that if Kipchoge wins the Oly Marathon in 2021, he might bounce around in his sock feet after the race and loft his AlphaFlys in the air (possibly to be paid--wink wink--under the table for doing so)? There would be a big media broohah how he has potentially forfeited his gold medal in doing so....and then after more media broohah (with days of twitter storming), it concludes with him getting to keep his medal, after-all.
Viren did the shoes off celebration after the 10 and was briefly disqualified from the 5 because of that.
It was known that there would be a victory lap when he passed Lopes on the last lap.
The kid had plenty of time to get his watch ready.

Well, it took about 10 minutes of looking to see that we both had some right and some misleading. At about 5:15 of the link below Viren is running a pretty quick victory lap in lane 8, but he is wearing his spikes. Right after there is also a quick glance of Finnish fans running in the middle of the track bearing flags, but Viren is not with them and they are not in lane 1.
At about 9:40 Viren is seen celebrating with the fans holding flags. He is carrying his spikes in his hands but not holding them over his head. This must be the shot used by RW.
My friend was also very visable over Don Quarrie's shoulder during his celebration following the 200. This picture was widely used, possibly in T&FN. My friend had this blown up so it was just him & Quarrie in the picture and made into a poster.

Good job "just the facts". In none of the videos show Viren running 5:20 pace (80s). It wasn't even 7min pace.

I went from Nike to Tiger to some offbeat kangaroo skin spikes that my head coach passed on to me. Of course I was a sprinter so my Tiger's weren't the same model being discussed here.
Malmo, just look at the shoe. If the midsole in the rear is only what is visible beneath the "wrap," the shoe would be so deep, it would cover the ankles.
I have zero shoe industry experience, to be fair, only a decade or so of ripping shoes apart to put them together better (I had an Elite Classic upper on a Mariah midsole for a time in the mid-80s).
