Your second point turns out to be a much bigger factor in why students choose the college they do than most people seem to recognize. The Chronicle of Higher Education had an article some years ago about why high school kids chose the college they did and found a significant number of them wanted a place with high profile athletics. They wanted to be in the crowd for the White Out or camped out in front of Cameron to make sure they got tickets for the UNC game.
About 12 -15 years ago when Appalachian State was still playing 1-AA football they went to Ann Arbor for their opening game and beat Michigan who was then ranked #2 nationally. ASU's application numbers went through the roof. The Chronicle said it was either a 1,000% or 10,000% increase. I actually think it was the latter but either one would make football a very worthwhile investment for a place like Appalachian State.
