How to "dig" in a race?

watch the rocky movies, they will show you how to dig. Don't ever become too much of a pansy, run in the rain, train in snow, and for god sakes get uncomfortable. that will give you the will to be a champion just like I am.

I can't find it, but I saw something that passing out isn't about how hard you did because people generally don't really pass out (ie lose consciousness). People are having a hard time modulating blood pressure after no longer getting the blood pumping action from their legs and there legs get weak so they fall.

You just need to focus on going harder than you need to. I was a sophomore in college before I understood how much a race can hurt, and probably cut like 4-5 seconds off my mile time just knowing I can feel like I'm going to die and still run another 300 meters. In high school I tried to feel like I was going to die at the end.

just do it! It's a great way to beat people that are more fit than you, by just wanting it more than them.

Having a mantra or simple phrase to help manage the psychological aspect of the pain is useful. For example, when I am really hurting I will often repeat to myself "who do you think you are? I AM!" This allows me to push through the pain

The answer is that "digging" is a myth. The results of any race will depend almost entirely on two factors: the shape that each runner is in at that given time, and the appropriateness of their racing strategy relative to their shape. At the elite or I'd say even the considerably sub-elite level (e.g. high school), each athlete's varying willingness to inflict physical pain upon themselves accounts for next to nothing in the final result. Hence any notion that you can considerably improve your performance simply by "digging" is incorrect.

The most absurd example of this thinking is the idea that a middle-aged British woman broke the marathon world record by having a significantly higher level of pain tolerance than the other 6 billion people on earth.

If you notice, elite events and world record performances don't conclude with anyone passing out or falling over at the end of the race.

You do see this at the end of a decathlon 1500.

If you're fit, you don't fall.

Decathletes don't need to spend much time building their endurance for 1/10 of their point total.

Run your quality workouts with more intensity.

The attitude wasn't necessary to get the point across. All you had to say is that there is more to training than the physical aspect. Most posters her do ignore the mental aspect, merely referring to "pure hate".
