I’m not sure where I fall on this issue (I think I recall reading that the NCAA has regulations in place for transgender athletes to compete, but not necessarily ones that are backed by high-quality science), but I know wherever Ny of us do fall we should all respect all people affected by any ruling on this issue. The QOTD doesn’t to that, and I wish the site would take it down.

Perhaps the answer here is that we have an open division for anyone; we have a XX division that requires all participants to have only 2 X chromosomes.

This is just a semantic change. Men's has always been the open/unrestricted division, whereas women was the one that restricted the field to a less-competitive subset.

Notice that nobody gives a s*** at all about bio women/transmen running in the men's divisions.

One of the points I tried to make clear, albeit somewhat subtly, in my OP that started this thread is how much sports glory, press attention and woke points that Franklin Pierce University got for putting Telfer forward as a competitor in female/women's track and field.

Franklin Pierce's press team, and Telfer's coach, went to great lengths to promote Telfer in the public eye as a civil rights hero akin to Jackie Robinson and Rosa Parks for being a "trailblazer" brave enough to break down the barriers that make female sports "exclusionary" and "discriminatory" towards males.

My own personal view is that Franklin Pierce and Telfer's coach did not really have Telfer's best, lifelong interests at heart here. Seems to me they were doing a lot of virtue signaling for their own short-term gain, as well as a lot of enabling - as is illustrated by the comments that Telfer's coach Zach Emerson made to the press in 2019:

I think the same is true of all the adult school and sports officials in Connecticut - and at organizations like the ACLU, GLAAD and Athlete Ally - who not only encouraged two confused teenage males, Terry Miller and Andraya Yearwood, to compete in girls' HS track, but have celebrated them as brave civil rights pioneers for doing so.

Honestly, do any posters here who have raised children or are specialists in human development really think encouraging this teenager to claim publicly to be a female and to compete in girls' athletics was really in the student's longterm best interests?

Isn't it possible that a central underlying issue here is boys being forced to pretend that they are the opposite sex because their parents and the other adult authority figures who have influence over their lives all adhere to incredibly regressive, rigid sex stereotypes and look down on boys who are sensitive, flamboyant and a bit "unmanly"? Could it be that these youngsters have been molded and coached by adults with deep-seated sexist and homophobic prejudices who are uncomfortable with the idea that some males are not decidedly not macho - and might even turn out to be gay?

You are WRONG to criticize FPU or and the coach. Your criticisms should rest solely with the NCAA and feminists in the media and in politics. For you to slander the coach is an outrage.

I might be the most angry person in the world that HE was allowed to compete as a female, I am a die hard Trump supporter. But the NCAA allowed it, the NCAA passed a specific transgender policy and the athlete and coach did abide by it.

I give Coach Emerson a ton of credit. This situation did not make his life easier, he became the villain in a lot of people's eyes. He likely did not get a raise for the athlete's success and it likely didn't even help his recruiting. It was a big distraction that probably affected everyone else on his team negatively. But he stuck by his athlete and fulfilled his responsibility as a coach with HONOR. If you can't respect that, the GTF off this site.

There's no indication that Coach Emerson consulted a single female person or considered any female person or athlete during this saga. He seemed to be single-mindedly focused on Telfer achieving success and glory in women's track and field. As a coach, if I were placed in a position that required me to facilitate the unfair treatment of actual female athletes, I would resign immediately. Perhaps I would sign my entire boys team up as girls at the next meet to highlight the absurdity of the situation, but then I would be gone. Actual integrity would not allow a coach to condone outright cheating, NCAA regulations be damned.

There it is, a sexism accusation exactly as I predicted earlier. It's wrong to criticize FPU and the coach because the NCAA literally passed a transgender policy to allow it. They were facing NCAA sanctions if they didn't let the athlete compete. They also would have faced a bombardment of lawsuits and harassment from the ACLU and other organizations that fight for transgender rights. It would have been a massive legal and PR nightmare if they didn't let the athlete compete.

Coach Emerson has more integrity in his little finger than you have in your entire body. You accused him of taking advantage of a transgender athlete to build his own career. Where is your evidence for that? He said he was proud of the athlete in a news article, is that your only proof? Oh man, he must be EVIL, how dare a coach be proud of his athlete!

In all respects, Coach Emerson's career has been hurt by this instance. He had a successful team before this athlete. His men's XC team qualified for nationals numerous times. He's had plenty of All-American athletes on the men's and women's team. Now many of his coaching peers shun him. He gets insulted online. It's hurt his recruiting. Despite all those negative consequences he fulfilled his responsibility as a coach with HONOR in the face of constant abuse and harassment.

To a coach, your athletes are your children. If you had a 22 year old son that wanted to change genders would you disown him?

Coach Emerson is clearly a man of outstanding honor and integrity. You're a person who enjoys slandering someone by name, anonymously, online with no evidence supporting your accusation. Yeah, you're real honorable.
