In the interview I posted above she was asked about the injury and what her training has been. On the injury she was not worried about it and her downtime "hasn't been too long" and she hoped to be in good shape by November. On her training, she was doing 60 mpw, then apparently took June and first half July off except she did swimming and core work, and expected to build back up to decent mileage during July.
By that standard it is plausible that any of the top high school runners might have needed surgery. But there is zero evidence that this actually happened, especially that she underwent "major surgery." But it would be a good trolling topic.
She gave an interview July 8th where she talked about her condition and training. Didn't sound like she was dealing with any major injury or problems.

Well, there are certain things that are in OP's favor (him speaking the truth).
1) Tuohy had a reoccurring knee injury since 2018. She had to miss races in late 2018, and then miss an entire summer of training in 2019. That's also why NXN was very hard to win for her last year, despite being the highest talent by far.
2) She ran 15:37 5000m (i), and many other outstanding times as young girl. You can assume that she trained quite hard to reach these times, and was pushing her body constantly to the limit. At one point, something is going to break, and her knee already was an issue multiple times.
3) She did not post anything on social media (Instagram) since Feb 15 this year, outside of a graduation pic. All other runners were posting training during Covid, or core workouts, etc.. A LOT of them did time trials. Tuohy has been a rather shy person and not active on social media in general, but it's another reason that maybe the last few months didn't include much running.
If she really was/is injured for multiple months and unable to train (surgery or not), it's probably the best to let others know. Otherwise there will be even more criticism if she underperforms in the first races, and people don't know that she was actually injured for half a year and maybe even underwent a drastic surgery.
I hope as much as you that it's nothing serious and she didn't lose much training time, but OP's statement (long injury/training break/surgery) seems to have a decent possibility, unfortunately.
as far as not posting since Feb 15, she did run at states 3 weeks after that, so not sure how that is relevant.
Surgery is the last thing you want. You want to avoid that option as much as possible as it has risk of long term implications. She’s too young for that.

The fact that she has had knee injuries in general isn't good.
she could have had something like plica surgery...very plausible...and be back to 100% training and fitness in matter of months with no long term effects. i've seen it happen more than once.

The point of this thread is to lambaste all of us uniformed morans for not knowing that a teenage girl had major knee surgery, which may or may not be true. The thread has been up here all day and no one has posted any evidence confirming the apparently obvious fact that the OP thinks we all should have known. One guy posted some speculation that someone could suspect knee issues, but nothing worthwhile. If she had minor knee surgery, it isn’t a good sign for her running career, but that would still be a major deviation from OP’s indignant intolerance for the general public not knowing about the major[/] knee surgery. People seem to have a hard time accepting the fact that Tuohy just had a bad day at NXN due to nerves (which she admitted to, and possibly her reaction to the the poor conditions (she said her legs and feet were numb from 3K on).
She ran 17:03 and 17:07 at Bowdoin Park to easily win the Federation and NXR races, neither of which were an all out effort. Claire Walters ran 17:28 at NXR which is a great time, but she was pretty tired at the finish. At NXN, giving everything she had that day Tuohy was only 10 seconds ahead of Walters - who looked better at the finish than Tuohy did.
Not to take anything away from Ewert and Thorvaldson (among others) who ran great at NXN, but that was an "off" Tuohy that day.
I think the knee issue affected her fitness for the early part of the XC season - and you can see that in her race results - but by year end she was pretty close to where she was the prior years,perhaps 10-15 seconds slower. By the end of indoor season she looked really fit for a fast mile time after running 4:21 for 1500 at the NY State meet with a big negative split, and making it look effortless.
But that is just my read on her.

she was healthy for cross-country and winter track, how was she get injured during the quarantine?
Also I really doubt she would have a surgery that involves stitches! Maybe she had her knee scoped, but it would be really weird if she had any type of surgery where they had to use stitches it's not 1950

Not true. Sometimes getting a surgery ahead of time/when there are no races is better. She’s barely 18 years old and will have plenty of time to get back to where she was with no pressure, along with eliminating the problem now as opposed to running through it/making it worse and maybe requiring much more serious surgery down the line. But then again, this is letsrun, where people act like a runner’s career is over because of one minor surgery.
