As a high school runner I did an OK job of dodging cross country and track. I say just OK because one of my training partners talked me into the cross thing sophomore year. What a waste of time! Nevertheless, I stuck out the entire 8 or 9 weeks or whatever it was. It didn't seem like there were year-round programs at the time, but what do I know, maybe some schools had something like that. If so, you'd have to quit to get out of it. In my case, there was nothing to quit if you lasted 2 months. Track was an unrelated program with an unrelated coach, so you weren't automatically part of it even if you did cross. Plenty of us were hammering out miles all year but there was no school-affiliated team or anything to quit in between seasons. I knew all the distance runners at school and I'm not aware of any participating in the track program although several ran cross - even me, but not all the way through including Senior year. So I'm not sure if quitting was very popular but simply not starting the season in the first place certainly was.
