Running shorts should be 2-3". Don't buy the long running shorts and expect them to be good to run in. These are a hold over from when kids showed up to xc practice in basketball shorts because they didn't know any better or wanted to look cool. Some never grew out of this and want long running shorts.
Split shorts are massively overrated. I started running in long, baggy soccer/generic/basketball shorts, and I even ran my first half marathon in cargo shorts. When I started getting more serious about running and decided to buy "real" running shorts I was eagerly looking forward to the blissful freedom of 2" split shorts that all the elite LRCers rave about. I was sorely disappointed.
The reality is that I never felt my movement was restricted in any of the shorts I had previously run in, so I didn't feel any more free or any less restricted in the short split shorts. And in fact while all of my previous shorts just move with my leg imperceptibly throughout my stride, the fabric of split shorts actually slides up and down my thigh quite noticeably. It's actually kind of distracting and less pleasant than running in any of my other shorts.
