Why in the world would anyone do a 24 miler on the treadmill?! I mean he has to have access to some trail where he could do this. It's not like he's snowed in or something.
Mental toughness? That's the best reason I can come up with.
Could be that he wants to simulate something or wants to moniter somehting closely.

Could also be that his career is pretty much over and he's just dicking around pumping as many sponsors as he can before he's cut off.
He wants to run the entire thing at a 10% grade.
In seriousness, I believe Canova* recommends to very long hill workouts (I don't recall specifics)...but many continuous miles uphill. Not sure why he'd do the whole thing on the treadmill though, b/c I think RC usually suggests ~10 mile aerobic capacity workouts on a 5% grade.

Also, I don't understand why Hall drinks Muscle Milk BEFORE a tough long run....shouldn't something heavy in protein and fat be used afterwards as a recovery aid? It would probably just give me a sore stomach during a run.

The source of the fear is that he is not doing a full marathon on the track. by only running 24 miles, his is losing those last 9 or so laps in which to complete the comeback to victory. (And with all this said, I could not hang with Hall for one lap on the track, let alone lap him)
Hall has glass legs. He is afraid of hitting the road for a long run and getting injured. Otherwise, there must be a Seventh Heaven marathon on Lifetime.
Think he'll finish?
Or show up and take sponsors $ and drop?
Solid long run for about a 30 minute 10K guy.

Most likely this. Obviously, Hall is one of the last guys who would prefer indoors to outdoors, but there can be some training benefits to the treadmill.
He should be going to Falmouth. Maybe he could crack top 15.

I heard he does all his long runs on a treadmill, so he can hold hands with Sara during it.
It is also because he does his long runs on Sundays. This way he never has to leave church on the holy day.
I know elite/serious runners do a lot of challenging workouts, but 24 miles on a treadmill is punishment, not a workout IMO. Six miles is my limit on a treadmill -- I'll run in just about any weather before running a long run on a treadmill.
Testing for what? No one has fitness tests done over 24 miles. Are you kidding me. He doesn't even have a coach to use the data. I guess he is a physiologist on the side.
