I'd say that every healthy, under 35 male in America could string 4 14.5 second 100m together....maybe I'm being unreasonable??
yes, you are.
I'm 35 My prs are 16:22, 33:48, 1:15:10 and 2:37 all run in the last 2 years.
I couldn't break 60 seconds for 400m if my life depended on it.
though I was able to run 30:52 for 10 km, I was only able to run sub 58 once in my life, and under 60 only a handful of times. That for someone who ran year in, year out and worked at it. Now at 54, sub 60 is only a dream.
Thanks for the inspiration, seriously, my speed is awful
Similar to you folks. 32 minute 10k guy who can't break 64.
Anything above 5k really has little to do with your 400 speed.

Are you Crazy? average guy at 2:48? or 4:30 for a mile, have you ever been to a high school meet? way to fast.

dang! you must have some crazy aerobic capacity! I can run the 400 meters 10 seconds faster than you but i can't even keep up with your 10k pace for more than 2 miles.

Based on the initial statement of "average" including a 57 quarter ability (which I also don't think is "average"), those times are pretty reasonable. Although I'm not sure about the marathon - a whole lot of stuff can happen between a 16:48 5k and 2:48 marathon.
My open 400 PR (only run a couple times) is 58. My other PR's are:
800 - 2:06 (also seldom run)
1600 - 4:27
3200 - 9:29
5k road - 15:37
5k XC - 15:39
I also ran a half marathon as a long tempo in 1:14:07. I'm definitely capable of slashing a lot of time off of that in an all-out effort (2-3 minutes). I would say that you guys aren't giving enough credit to what could be "potentially done." I know that my 400 PR isn't going to get much better, but as a guy that just graduated high school, I would hope that I can keep improving upon those times in the next couple decades.
I think at my peak I could have run 56, with a running start. My times were:
800 - 2:05 (HS)
1500 - 4:02
3000 - 8:30
5K track - 14:43
10K track - 30:39
Don't need a whole lot of speed if you can hold the speed you do have.
I'm 35 and I can break 60 but can't break a 17 minute 5K
i can run a 51 quarter, am a hell of a lot faster than 2:05, havent ran the mile or 2mile in about 3 years. i did run a 5k in 16:52 tho...and i think that the jump down from your 16:48 to a 9:50 is a little unreasonable, to say the least.
Not true. I think your base leg speed has alot to do with it. Geb can run 50 for the quater and I bet Bekle can run faster. I\\\'m a 49 guy and you tell everyone I blow by at the end of a 5k race that leg speed has nothing to do with it.
My open 400 pr, about 58
