Bummer. Just bad timing but a hamstring tear is nothing to mess with for a distance runner. Proper rehab though will heal that up fairly quick. Injuries suck.

Because of Schumacher's insistance of very little racing, Chris has zero to show for 2011, even though he was very fit much of the year.

Sad to see an athlete in his prime waste years like this.

Chris Solinsky may be out of worlds. He might of run very few races this year. He may have a terrible hamstring tear.

But, he is the active AR holder in the 10k in a time that all of us remember and still should til this day. This year he had terrible luck with the injury, but he's human, and we all have injuries. Right now my right knee is killing me from over-training and I have a marathon in 10 weeks! It makes me feel good when even my hero can stand up and say, hey I gotta sit this one out.

Chris Solinsky will come back with so much fire next season and straight up dominate. He will go under 26:50 if he sides with the 10k or under 12:50 if he sticks with the 5k. He ran times last year that we never though were possible outta HIM or any big REAL dude.

But lets look at what he have to look forward to this year, a stellar team of Lagat, Rupp and now Bumbi in the 5k. A faster team we have never sent. One or possibly two could medal and Bumbi will gain great experience, since he is new to this World Championship Caliber level.

To Chris, I am looking forward to your comeback, bigger and better than ever. I think 2012 will be an amazing year for American distance (and even middle distance running). The Olympics in London will be a showcase, and our hero will be back to run, back to win the GOLD MEDAL. We just have to wait. Thanks for your dedication to the sport Chris!

How much money does Solinsky make for 2011?

Nice post. Time to work on the plan for next year, his fitness is there. He can heal up but he needs to get back to some racing as soon as he can. Can't stay away from that too long.

that "no racing" policy is literal bullshiite. it really does suck that chris will look back on 2011 and see a really good 4200m split in a 5k, a 3:54 mile and a 3:35-3:36 1500 at stanford. not trying to take the mile and 1500 ... they are great. 3:36 translates to a sub 13:00... the "no racing" policy has got to go.

an interview with lagat on flotrack said it best. the kenyans have been racing since january. practice makes perfect and practicing the 5k is what needs to be done. sorry for rambling.

I completely agree. It's odd that today's top US runners are so damn cautious about their racing, yet seemingly get injured, sick, or otherwise knocked out of races way more frequently than the top guys from the previous era.

If Chris runs sub-13 in Brussels or Berlin, then he is dirty. You simply do not rehabilitate a strained or torn hamstring that quickly.

His twitter implies that he just ended his season and will try to get healthy for next year.

Second, it sounds like he's been having hamstring issues all season. Very unfortunate, especially considering that a conservative few days off early on will often allow a pulled hamstring to heal up really fast.

This may be a blessing in disguise, though--it'll give him a chance to back off and refocus on the future. The Brojos made a good point a while ago that it was very unlikely that Solinsky would have as good of a 2011 as he did 2010, and it seems they were right. A lot of things went right last year, and it only took a few things going wrong this year to make it all go to hell.

what a bummer. but honestly, is it realistic to think that chris could top last summer? 26:59 and 2-3 sub 13 5k's in that span of time was remarkable.

2011 is just a wasted year and he behaved badly.

He's gotten so good at dropping out of races that now he isn't even starting them.

To pop it back in time for the Olympics next year will be tough. But was he ever really a serious candidate for a medal anyways?

in hindsight (thought it crossed my mind in earlier this season), this was to be expected at some point for Chris. Why? Because he has been indestructible the last several years. Everyone always said: Solinksy's biggest strength is he doesn't break down or get hurt, and this allows him to keep upping the ante on his training. With that mind, EVENTUALLY, he had to get hurt. No one is truly indestructible, so the eventuality of injury finally occurred.

So while it is disappointing for sure, it's really not that big of a shock. Better this year than next. Of course, once one gets an injury, it is always there lurking. Let's hope solinsky is a as good a healer as he had been at not getting hurt in the first place.

(or maybe he is just playing mind games with Rupp and will actually show up and run. :-) )

Wasn't this the same problem he's had for a while this year but kept training through it? Not surprised.
