Adam Goucher gets bashed so much on these boards for his current running disappointment, but to tell you the truth, Winning the NCAA Individual XC Title in and of itself is a huge accomplishment. So what if he didn't make the Olympics, its not like he would have placed. I would rather win the NCAA Title than just get knocked out of the Olympics early, but thats just me.

I won eleven NCAA titles but the best I ever did in the Olympics was 9th place in Tokyo! I was always injured at the wrong time. But, to your question, I think the Olympics would be a better place to do well because most of the best runners in the world are there. The NCAA has some good runners too but not the world's best usually. NCAA athletes are vulnerable to sudden moves. You go out too fast, you jump into a wild sprint in the middle somewhere, you do your finishing kick with two laps to go instead of waiting till the last lap, NCAA runners fold when you do those things. Usually the Olympians know those moves and can survive.

Yeah, certain countries just throw volunteers out there but to be a US Olympian you had to place in the top three in the US at your event. That is an achievement in itself.

if I was a runner I would want to be on US Olympic team . no body cares about the hammer, so Ill take being NCAA champ and get a nice medal rather than probably not making the Olympic final and no medal . xc ncaa would be wonderful, very hard to do .

But what about this: Olympic race-walker or . . . NCAA cross-country All-America . . . or NCAA 1500-meter conference champion . . . or catcher on a triple-A baseball team . . . or . . . ?
