Most of the people I talk to do not understand why performance enchancing drugs should be illegal for PROFESSIONAL althetes (yes, ban them for high school and college althetes. But for the PRO that has millions of dollars at stake, let them take what they want, test them and disclose it. No fines or bans - just disclsoure).
To be clear, we understand they are illegal, so taking them is wrong and you should be punished. That said, it is an arbitary standard. Who decides what is legal and illegal? What standard is employed (by WADA)?
Why are altitude tents, interval training, proper dieting, LT test, ice baths, personal trainers, smart water et. al all legal? What are cortisone shots legal and epo is not?
Is it because drugs are dangerous? They are only dangerous because they are administered by althetes or shady trainers. Make it legal and let experienced doctors administer them in proven programs and the danger is no worse than running on a street in traffic. More distant runners/cyclist are killed by traffic than drugs. Should we ban training on public streets?
Is it because it is unfair? I read that 90% of all the medals award in endurance sports are to althetes that train at atitiude. How unfair to the 95% of the world that lives near sea-level. Ban anyone that lives/trains above 3,000 feet. (shut down Boulder!)
More to the point, I also read that EPO does essentially the same thing for an endurance altlete as sleeping in an altitide tent and training at sea level. In fact I remember epo being called the "poor man's altitude tent" when it first came on the scene years ago. So why discrinimate against those that cannot afford altitude tents? Let them take epo under a doctor's care.
Ah, but EPO is dangerous. Then why do we give it to cancer patients (it was invented for cancer patients)? Lance took it in 1998 when he had cancer. He had to to live. Should he get a permanent ban for that? Do we ban anyone from competition that has cancer as they have to take a performance enchancing drugs to live?
Bottom line, I have a hard time getting outraged by drug cheaters. Yes it wrong but only becasue someone arbirtarily said it was. Explain to me why I's wrong.
