How many events will Sifan Hassan run at the 2024 Paris Olympics?

If she goes for the 5,000-10,000-marathon triple, she'll get at least one day off between every race while the quadruple would require her to run the marathon less than 12 hours after the 1500 final

2024 is almost here and it’s going to be an Olympic year. One of the biggest stars for the Olympics in athletics will be the Netherlands’ Sifan Hassan. In 2021, Hassan made waves as she did something the world hadn’t seen since 1948 — competed in and won medals in three different track events at the same Olympics — as she captured gold in the 5,000 and 10,000 and bronze in the 1500. Since then, Hassan has added even more to her repertoire as she moved to the marathon this year, winning both London and Chicago.

Hassan is now the 7th=fastest woman in history at 1500 (3:51.95), the 9th-fastest in history at 5000 (14:13.42) and 2nd-fastest in history in the 10,000 (29:06.82) and marathon (2:13:44).

Might she consider running all four events in 2024? That’s what we discussed recently on a Supporter’s Club bonus edition of the LetsRun.com Track Talk podcast (video embedded below).

If Hassan goes for the 5000-10,000-marathon triple, the schedule is quite doable as she’ll have at least one day off between every event as shown below.

Hassan’s Olympic lineup if she does the 5000-10,000-marathon
Friday, August 2 – 6:10 pm – 5000 1st round
Monday, August 5 – 9:10 pm – 5000 final
Friday, August 9 –  8:55 pm  – 10,000 final
Sunday, August 11 – 8:00 am – Marathon

Emil Zatopek is the only human to ever win gold in  5,000, 10,000 and marathon in Olympic history and he won gold in all three at the same Olympics — 1952 Helsinki.

But might Hassan try to do all four events in Paris? That makes things much harder. The good news is the quadruple wouldn’t require Hassan to run two events on the same day like she did in 2021 when she had to run the first round of the 1500 roughly 12 hours before the 5000 final, but she would have to run the marathon less than 12 hours after the 1500 final.

Hassan’s Olympic lineup if she does the 1500-5000-10,000-marathon
Friday, August 2 – 6:10 pm – 5000 1st round
Monday, August 5 – 9:10 pm – 5000 final
Tuesday, August 6 – 10:05 am -1500 1st round
Thursday, August 8, 7:35 pm – 1500 semis
Friday, August 9, 8:55 pm ET – 10,000 final
Saturday, August 10 – 8:25 pm – 1500 final
Sunday, August 11 – 8:00 am – Marathon

Only one human has ever won four individual medals in running events at an Olympics. At the 1924 Paris Games, Finland’s Ville Ritola won gold in the 10,000 and steeplechase and silver in cross country and 5000.
