11:15 update: ALBERT KORIR WINS THE 2021 NEW YORK CITY MARATHON

Korir, who was 2nd in New York in 2019 but had barely raced since, opened a gap heading into the Bronx at 20 miles and wins in 2:08:22, 44 seconds up on runner-up Mohamed El Araby of Morocco. Elkanah Kibet is the top American in 4th in 2:11:15.

Peres Jepchirchir wins it 2:22:39 with unofficial 5:09 final mile!

Cheptoo 2nd . Yeshaneh 3rd. Seidel 4th. She pulled away coming off Columbus Circle. 2:22:39 time just 8 seconds off course record.

10:58 am Mile 25:  2:16:25 (5:15) 3 still together. That mile was faster but is net downhill

10:45 am update: Mile 20 – Korir has now opened a gap on Willis Ave Bridge
Mile 19 – 1:30:50 Kandie and Korir are now opening a gap on El Aaraby and Faniel.
Mile 18 – 1:27:43 (4:50)  Kandie and Korir have caught El Aaraby and Faniel
Mile 17 –  1:22:53 (4:52)
Mile 16 –   1:18:01 (4:51) Daniel has now closed gap and he’s right behind El Aaraby again.
25k: 1:55:55 Lead has gone from 51 seconds at halfway to now 43 seconds. Top 3 in Chase pack is Kibiwott Kandie, Alberto Korir and Elkanah Kibet of US.  Nageeye and Bekele are another 8 seconds back.  El Aaraby now opening small gap on Faniel coming onto First Avenue.
Mile 15 –  1:13:10 (4:57)

Women- It’s going to come down to the rolling hills of Central Park. Miles 24, 25, and 26 are hilly. Women are on mile 22 with a pack of 3.

Mile 22 – 1:59:41 (5:36)  Cheptoo, Yeshaneh, and Jepchirchir running three abreast.
Mile 21 – 1:55:05 5:16 unofficial
Mile 20 –  1:49:49. Cheptoo has joined Jepchirchir and Yeshaneh.
Mile 19 –  Seidel dropped at 19 miles. And now Aga falling off too. It’s down to Jepchirchir and Yeshaneh as they head into the Bronx on Willis Ave Bridge.
Mile 18 –  1:39:19 5:15 fastest mile of race. Lead pack of 4 Jepchirchir (Olympic gold medallist), Rita Aga, Molly Seidel and Ababel Yeshaneh.
Mile 17 –  1:34:04 (5:26) Jepchirchir to the front just after 17 miles. Aga, Yeshaneh, and Seidel go with it.


10:35 am update: Kandie and Korir Have Caught El Aaraby and Faniel, Viola Cheptoo has caught Jepchirchir and Yeshaneh

Men’s race:
Mile 18 – 1:27:43 (4:50)  Kandie and Korir have caught El Aaraby and Faniel

Mile 17 –  1:22:53 (4:52)
Mile 16 –   1:18:01 (4:51) Daniel has now closed gap and he’s right behind El Aaraby again.
25k: 1:55:55 Lead has gone from 51 seconds at halfway to now 43 seconds. Top 3 in Chase pack is Kibiwott Kandie, Alberto Korir and Elkanah Kibet of US.  Nageeye and Bekele are another 8 seconds back.  El Aaraby now opening small gap on Faniel coming onto First Avenue.

Mile 19 Women’s Race: We’re down to 2. Molly Seidel dropped.

Seidel dropped at 19 miles. And now Aga falling off too. It’s down to Jepchirchir and Yeshaneh. So it’s the Olympic golde medallist in the marathon vs the former world record holder at half marathon.


10:24 am Men’s Update: update. El Aaraby and Eyob Faniel’s lead down to 43 seconds

25k: 1:55:55 Lead has gone from 51 seconds at halfway to now 43 seconds at 25k. Top 3 in Chase pack is Kibiwott Kandie, Alberto Korir and Elkanah Kibet of US.  Nageeye and Bekele are another 8 seconds back.
Mile 15 –  1:13:10 (4:57)
Mile 14 – 1:08:13 (4:53). Kandie, Kibet, and Korir now breaking away from chase pack and trying to close gap.

Halfway – 1:03:57 Faniel and El Araby lead by 51 seconds – Chase pack at 1:04:48


10:20 am update: 5:15 Fastest Mile of Women’s Race Lead Pack of 4

Mile 18 –  139:19 5:15 fastest mile of race. Lead pack of 4 Jepchirchir (Olympic gold medallist), Rita Aga, Molly Seidel and Ababel Yeshaneh
Mile 17 –  1:34:04 (5:26) Jepchirchir to the front just after 17 miles. Aga, Yeshaneh, and Seidel go with it.
Mile 16 – 1:28:38 (5:23 mile)
25k 1:26:11 (5k 17:13)
Mile 15 – 1:23:05 (5:36). Jepchirchir and Aga leading on the Queensboro Bridge.
Mile 14 –  1:17:29 (5:28)

Halfway – 1:12:43 at half. 9 women in lead pack.


10:12 AM  Mohamed El Aaraby and Eyob Faniel Hit Halfway in 1:03:57 and Lead by 51 Seconds

8 guys in the chase pack including American Ellkanah Kibet. Shadrack Biwott and Ben True are in 2nd pack at 1:05:42.

10:05am Women are going over Queensboro Bridge
Mile 15 –Mile 15 – 1:23:05 (5:36). Jepchirchir and Aga leading on the Queensboro Bridge.
Mile 14 –  1:17:29 (5:28)
Halfway – 1:12:43 at half. 9 women in lead pack.



Men’s  Update: Aaraby and Faniel still in front
Mile 11 – 54:42 (4:51) Faniel, 20th at Olympics, His PB is 2:07:19 is Italian national record. He was born in Eritrea.
Mile 10 –  48:51 (4:45)
15k: 45:39 for Leaders. Pack at 46:02

 


9:55 AM Update: Annie Frisbie of the US Leads at Halfway in 1:12:43

For reference in 2019, the halfway split was 1:11:39.

Meanwhile in the men’s race
Mile 10: 48:51 (4:45)  Mohamed El Aaraby (11th at Olympics) and Eyob Faniel (Italy) big lead on men’s side.
Mile 9 – 44:06 (4:45). Faniel and El Aaraby have grown their lead. 23-second lead.
Mile 8 – 39:21  (4:48) 14 second lead for Faniel and El Araby
MIle 7 – 34:33 (4:51)
10K: 30:43 (2:09:36 pace). 11 men within 5 seconds of lead. Now just after 10k, El Araby and Faniel are starting to push the pace and pack strings out a bit.


9:53 am update:

Women’s 20k: 68:59  (16:57 last 5k, fastest of race) Lead pack of 11 including 5 Americans with Annie Frisbie leading
Mile 12 – 5:21 mile
Mile 10 – 55:42 (2:26:02 pace) Annie Frisbie for the US still in front as the pace is still reasonable 2:26 pace

15K: 52:04 . 12 women in lead pack, led by Annie Frisbie. Americans Frisbie, Seidel, Taylor, Thweatt, and Kipyego all in there. 5k splits have been 17:59, 17:03 and 17:02.

Women’s 10k: 35:02 (2:27:49 pace)– again, Jepchirchir is listed as leading but it’s mostly been Seidel/Taylor. Only time Jepchirchir moves to front is to grab her bottles.

Mile 1: 6:06 -uphill always slow


9:33 AM Men’s race Update: Mile 5 – 24:46 (4:52, 2:09:52 pace). Ben True is with second pack
Mile 4 – 19:54 (2:10:26 pace) Pack catches Nijhuis just after 4 miles, with Bekele now leading. True in second pack.
5K: 15:34 for main pack.
9:27 am Bekele and pack pass Nijhuis
5k: 15:26 for Thijs Nijhuis of Denmark,  Rest of Field 15:34
Mile 1: 5:21 uphill on Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge


Update: 9:27 am Kenenisa Bekele is leading the NYC Marathon

4 miles 19:54, 5:01 last mile. Nijhuis has been caught.

9:06 AM: Men’s race is off. For the first time ever the elite men will start ahead of the masses.
