Road Runners Club of America Giving $65,000 in Grants to Athletes Training for Marathon Trials – Apply by This Friday

Arlington, VA – The Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) has extended the deadline to Friday, August 7, for U.S. elite athletes to apply for a one-time special grant designed to support Rio hopefuls. The RRCA Board of Directors developed the funding project to help these runners prepare for competition heading into the Olympic Games qualifying marathon that will be hosted in Los Angeles, CA in February 2016.

Through this project, the RRCA will provide for a special round of grants to support athletes that have qualified for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Marathon and have not previously competed at an Olympic Games. This special grant project is separate from the annual Roads Scholar grant program. This grant is open to all athletes that meet the funding criteria. The RRCA will provide grants to 6-8 men and women, up to 16 grants, in the amount of $2,500 per athlete. The RRCA will also provide an additional amount of $500 to any qualifying Roads Scholar grantees from 2014-15 class or earlier.

As part of this funding project, the RRCA will also be providing five grants in the amount $5,000 each, for a total of $25,000 on a one-time basis, to U.S. Distance Training Centers that support primarily U.S. athletes focusing on either the marathon trials or the 10,000m track trials. U.S. Distance Training Centers.  The deadline to apply for a training center grant has closed and applications are currently being reviewed.

“As distance runners look to trials preparation, the RRCA continues its 50-plus year tradition by providing this additional financial support for elite athlete development,” explained Jean Knaack, RRCA executive director. “By late August, the RRCA will provide a one-time, guaranteed contribution of support totaling $65,000, with bonus money to be awarded to qualifying athletes, for the maximum allocation of $76,000 towards this unique funding project.”

To round out the financial support for this funding project, the RRCA will also award a bonus to the male and female athletes that earn a spot on Team USA to run in the marathon.
