A Fan's Guide To The 2012 Samsung Diamond League Shanghai Track & Field Meet

By LetsRun.com
May 17, 2012

The second Samsung Diamond League event of the year takes place in Shanghai, China on Saturday evening (Saturday morning in the US). The fields aren't as stellar as what the fans got to see in the seaon opener in Doha, but there are some interesting things to pay attention to for sure.

In terms of mid-d and distance action, Kenenisa Bekele returns to the 5,000 for the first time in almost three years, Asbel Kiprop drops down to the 800 to face a potential new Kenyan star, the world indoor champs at 1,500 and 3,000 clash in the 1,500 as Genzebe Dibaba makes her outdoor debut, and four of the top six from the women's steeple at Worlds compete.

Plus a great men's 110 hurdles, shot put and javelin and women's 200.

We break down the middle-distance and distance action for you before doing the rest of the running events and then the field events. Note, things aren't broken down in the order that they'll occur.

You can see the start times of the actual events below:

Men's 5,000: Kenenisa Bekele Returns To The 5,000

September 4, 2009 - that is the last time Kenenisa Bekele ran a 5,000 on the track.

The formerly virtually unbeatable Bekele, who certainly was beatable last week in Doha when he ran 7:40.00 for 3,000, will return to the 5,000 for the first time in almost three years on Saturday. He'll face a field full of Kenyan and Ethiopian challengers led by fellow Ethiopian Dejen Gebremeskel, who won the bronze at world's last year and seems to be in good form as he won Carlsbad earlier this year.

Kenya's Vincent Chepkok, who has run fast in May both of the last two years (12:51 in 2010, 12:55 last year), also is competing as is fellow Kenyan Thomas Longosiwa, who ran 7:33.68 in Doha last week and was 6th at Worlds in the 5,000 last year.

We're sure 21-year-old Ethiopian Yenew Alamirew, who ran 7:27 twice in February of 2011 would find it to be a thrill of  lifetime to beat the great Bekele.

LRC Analysis: This is a race all about one thing for us. Does Bekele take a step forward or backward from last week's performance?

If Bekele takes a step forward and is competitive and runs anything under 13:05, then the world's 10,000 meter runners need to be getting real worried about London. A step backward and anything over 13:10 (although a 7:40 only equates to about 13:16) will give everyone else a lot of hope.

We're expecting a step forward. 3,000 is a little bit short for Bekele and last week was a big rust buster for Bekele, who hadn't run a 3,000 since July of 2009. Remember, last fall, he didn't look good at Worlds in the 10,000 but then ran a world leader 19 days later. Admittedly, this is only 8 days later.

This race also is a good early look at who might be able to challenge Bernard Lagat and Mo Farah in the 5,000 at Worlds. The 21-year-old Alamirew is someone we will be paying great attention to. If he wins, watch out, as he's clearly a talent who just didn't seemingly get his peak right last year.

There also are some talented supposed 17- to 18-year-olds in the race that could surprise. In our minds, anyone with a 1994 birth date either is an age cheat or huge talent.

Men's 800: Asbel Kiprop Faces A Potential New Kenyan Star?

On paper, this race is all about Olympic 1,500 champ Asbel Kiprop fresh off of the first sub-3:30 1,500 clocking of his career facing World Championships 4th placer form last year Marcin Lewandowski of Poland and multiple time medallist at 800 Alfred Kirwa Yego of Kenya.

But Kirwa Yego seems to be struggling right now (1:46 last week in the B race of Doha) and so the Kenyan besides Kiprop that we'll be paying very close attention to is Leonard Kosencha.

Now many of you are like, "Who the hell is that?" Well, let us tell you (there is a reason why you come to LetsRun.com after all, isn't there?).

Last year, only one man beat world record holder David Rudisha all year and that was Mohamed Aman of Ethiopia. Well, guess who absolutely destroyed Aman by .60 in July of last year to win the world youth title? Leonard Kosencha.

We have no idea why Kosencha, who ran 1:44.08 to win the world youth title, didn't run the pro circuit and try to go to Worlds, as we thought he very well could have been a medal threat. But this year, he's in the pro ranks and this is his Diamond League debut.

We were going to say it's also his 2012 pro debut, but he actually ran on Wednesday in Daegu against none other than Mohamed Aman. This time, Aman won convincingly 1:43.54 to Kosencha's 1:44.74.

LRC Analysis: It'll be interesting to see if Kiprop looks as good as he did last week and we'll be paying really close attention to him and Kosencha. Kosencha might be a future star.

Strong showings by Kosencha or Lewandowski are bad news for Nick Symmonds fans who are hoping for a medal.

Women's 1,500: World Indoor Champ Genzebe Dibaba Makes Her Outdoor Debut & Will Clash With Kenya's World Indoor 3k Champ Helen Obiri

This race is all about the youngest Dibaba sister, 21-year-old Genzebe, making her 2012 outdoor debut.

The former world junior cross-country champion had trouble finding her calling as a pro in the distance events, but the move down to the 1,500 has been special for her this year. She was undefeated indoors and easily the class of the world indoor field. She'll face last year's Kenyan champ in 22-year-old Helen Obiri, who won the world indoor 3,000 crown. Also in the field is the 4th placer at Worlds last year in Ibtissam Lakhouad of Morocco, who raced indoors this year in the US at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix and Fayetteville meets.

4-time World Championships medallist at 800, Janeth Jepkosgei, who is planning on moving up to the 1,500 after this year, might also be someone worth watching. With Caster Semenya and Pamela Jelimo in good for this year, her best bet for a medal might be to move up a year early.

LRC Analysis: Strong showings by Dibaba, Obiri or Lakhouad should make American 1,500 fans nervous, as the women's 1,500 is America's best bet for a medal on the track on the ladies mid-d/distance side. A big win here by Dibaba and she's our 1,500 favorite - if she's not there already. How does Obiri do in the 1500 this year after her great indoor 3000 win?

Women's Steeplechase: A Battle Of #s 3, 4, 5 And 6 From Last Year's World Champs

Kenya's Milcah Chemos was undefeated in this event last year until it mattered most - Worlds - but she did end up with bronze in Daegu. She'll look to get back to her winning ways in Shanghai against a field that also includes the 4th (Mercy Njoroge), 5th (Lydia Rotich) and 6th (Sofia Assefa) placers at last year's World Championships.

Assefa is also Ethiopia's national record holder at 9:15.04.

US world championship team member Stephanie Garcia, who was the the NCAA runner-up last year while at Virginia, is in the field in her Diamond League debut.

Men's 110 Hurdles: China's Hero Liu Xiang Faces America's Big Three, Plus a Look at 7 Stepping

The meet concludes with a fantastic men's 110 hurdles. Chinese hero and 2004 Olympic champ Liu Xiang will clash with the man who won last year's Worlds, Jason Richardson, after Xiang was robbed of gold last year after a bump with Dayron Robles.

The funny thing is Richardson very well maybe only the third best American in the rest as the field also includes American record holder David Oliver and Aries Merritt.

In Daegu on Wednesday, the three Americans raced and Merrit was the victor. Merritt also is the world leader so far this year at 13.03 (12.99 windy) back a low-key Arkansas meet. Merritt's change from 8 steps to 7 steps to the first hurdle has paid off big time, first with the World indoor title, now with huge pbs outdoors. Dayron Robles was the first stud to try 7 stepping, soon David Oliver tried it to great success, then Liu Xiang on his comeback from injury did it last year. It's clearly the way for the pros to hurdle and can change careers in Merritt's and Oliver's case. More on 7 stepping here

Asafa Powell seems to be the class of the men's 100. Fresh off a 9.88 last week, he should't lose to anyone in the field as no one else has broken 10.00 last year. Nesta Carter and Mike Rodgers could surprise if Powell falters.
